Problems using Apple 23" Cinema Display with KVM switch

I have an Apple 23" Cinema Display (A1082), a CS-1764 KVM switch and 4 Linux boxes with various NVidia video cards.

Everything works fine as long as I boot each linux box with the KVM switch set to the box that's booting.

However, if any of the linux boxes are rebooted with the KVM set to another box, when that the linux box is selected the monitor will show a black screen with the LED on the front showing 3 short flashes.

I know that the 3 short flashes means that the monitor doesn't support the resolution it's seeing, but each linux box is set to a size/resolution that works fine if it was booted while connected.

Does anyone have any pointers? Is this a monitor, KVM switch or video card/driver issue?

welcome to the joys of EDID. Higher end KVMs let you hard code EDID, yours must just pass it through which is why it works when you boot a machine and your monitor is selected, but doesn't work when you boot a machine and don't have the monitor on it.

Look at the first answer in this post - you might be able to restrict your Linux installs to only modes that the Cinema Display supports - that would probably be the easiest.

Or you can get a hardware EDID dongle to force the resolution you want, but at $70+ for each computer, figuring out how to do it in software is probably a lot cheaper :)
