Problems reading/writing usb hard drive?

I put together a usb hard drive for a friend, and it's been giving him problems lately.

These are the parts I used:

Now, whenever he tries to play a file, he gets errors like this:

He's on an Acer laptop, with both usb ports plugged in. It worked fine for a while, then this started popping up. I told him to try to reformat it, but he has files he wants to save on it, and whenever he tries to copy them off the same type of error occurs.

Now the main point is, is there anything he can do short of reformatting? Also, could it possibly be a virus? He's plugged into his school's network without any sort of anti-virus program.
