problems overclocking

so with my same setup with pqi 3200 ram i was able to OC to 2.75GHz
now with my upgrade to crucial pc4000 i was hoping for the best and so far nuthin
the best stable overclock i can get is 215 x 11 for a miserable 2.36GHz
any thoughts on how i can get higher?
i have read the sticky's and followed all the steps without much lucall changes are done in the bios and right now i'm running ddr500 with htt x4
my voltages have been moved around to 2.8 for ram and 1.45 for cpu

Maybe I don't totally understand this, but are you saying you were running at 2.75 1:1 with your PQI RAM or were you running a divider?

have you tried running 2T or loosening the timings?

This is a guide I'd recommend you read over for info on overclocking in general, and then check out this guide for info on overclocking your RAM to see how far it'll go to begin with.
 
sry yeah i had a divider going i don't remember how much but yeah it was with a divider
right now i have the timings on auto is that bad? but i'll try to loosen them

You'll want to manually set them just in case the motherboard isn't running the correct timings. Eclipse's OC guides for both the processor and RAM are some of the best out there (particularily for the newer overclocker).

change the ddr500 ratio to ddr400 or ddr333 and see how much higher you can get the cpu

well i ran ddr400 and thats what i wanted to overclock with but i decided to go under to ddr333 and wow it OCed like before no probs 2.75 almost stable it would run fine n 33secs for superpi 1 meg just like before so man i guess this RAM doesn't do much more than the PQI except the ddr500 in the first post
now i have a question i mean itz prolly in the stickys but i haven't been able to decode it out of them
the FSB:DRAM thing in cpuz now if i am at ddr333 it says CPU/14 then at regular ddr400 itz CPU/11 n now with my ddr500 itz CPU/9 and i kno my friend who has AM2 has CPU/8 now with that all said what is better haveing around 2.5GHz or a better FSB:DRAM?
 
guess you didn't read the guide in my sig. to quote from it:

On K8 CPU's, the Memory Controller is on the cpu die, and operates at CPU mhz. Because of this, one cannot simply make a ratio between the HTT/FSB and Memory speed, but instead, there is an INTEGER DIVIDER from the CPU mhz that sets the ram clock. This divider is calculated with the DRAM Frequency Set option and the CPU Multiplier.
To find this divider, one must take the ratio selected:
<snipped long list of ratios>


and divide it into the CPU Multiplier.
Example:
CPU Multi = 9x
DRAM Frequency = 166mhz (5:6)
HTT/FSB = 320mhz

the CPU speed would be 2880mhz.
Now, the important part: How to Calculate the Memory Divider
Memory mhz = CPU Clock / round up(CPU Multiplier/Memory Divider)
So, that would be:
Memory mhz = 2880mhz / round up( 9 / 5/6 )
9 / 5/6 = 10.8. rounded up, this is 11
so now we have 2880mhz / 11 = 261.8mhz for the final Memory mhz.

actually i'm still trying to comprehend it but i liked that wording a lot
so right now i havea 2200 clock / ( 9 multi / (5/6 ?)) then the ? would be the FSB: DRAM so am i losing performance by running ddr500 n having this 5/6 ?
 
the ratio itself doesn't effect performance at all. what matters is the final ram speed.. but even then, you're looking at a 1-2% difference at most :p

but yes, that whole bit, when calculated out, turns into cpu/11, which is the memory divider your system is using for the ram

why is it when i have ddr500, everytime i set my HTT/FSB to more then stock it raises the RAM speed
i had ddr500 for the dram frequency and the HTT/FSB was 200 stock so i raised it to 210 and after booting CPU-z said i had raised my ram frequency too
essentially what i wanted was ddr500 with an HTT/FSB of 250 to give me 2.75GHz but now this seems unreasonable is there something i'm doing wrong or is it just nesscessary to divide the ram to ddr333 to get my overclock

that is exactly what the whole quote above was trying to exlain

setting ddr500 simply sets a ratio based on the cpu multi that divides the cpu speed by a number to get the ram clock...

so say i set ddr500 with a 9x cpu multi.. ddr500 is a 5:4 ratio

9 / (5/4) = 7.2 -> rounds up to 8 for cpu/8


so obviously, if the ram is based off the cpu speed, when you increase the cpu speed by raising the htt, it will also raise the ram clock :D

oic so i was wrong to hope for both ddr500 and HTT of 250 but waht about ddr400 and HTT of 250 should that be possible (with prolly some messing with timings)
and hopefully once i get the time i will try out that guide to finally set a good OC
 
yeah, try to ddr400 ratio, with the htt at 250mhz, the ram will also be at 250mhz, unless you're using a 1/2 multi, or the 4x multi :p
 
So far i have a MAX HTT/FSB of 340 MHz
a CPU MAX of 2750 MHz with a multi of 11
now i jus gotta do the RAM part n mix n match

kinda weird how i could only get 2.75 with the cpu i would have expected more.....
these clocks seem right so far right?
 
to quote the guide "Set the stock timings for your ram in the Memory Configuration page"

should i set my stock timings for ddr400 : 2, 3, 3, 8 or for ddr500 : 2.5, 4, 4, 10?
or just try both n see what's best

the stock volts are 1.4 i was it at 1.55 but it was too hott like 65 n i've never seen my cpu above 55 so i lowered to 1.5 volts and thats how i got the 2.75 GHz at around 61 degrees celcius
 
yeah i think i should remount my heatsink i have some more AS5 in the tube because yesterday i hit 70 degrees celcius man it was a bad idea to OC in the heat of the day i hate summer can't ski can't OC thanks for the help
so far i've gotten 2.7GHz Prime95 Stable
32.8 secs in super pi
i guess the RAM was worth it for OCing in the winter when i idle at 23 degrees and max out at 50
 
another question is it safe to set clockgen to OC at startup or is it better for me to set it each time?

I belive most people use clockgen to bump up FSB in Windows, however, once you find a stable overclock with clockgen, set the FSB in BIOS.
