I'm installing an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail - 280$ in an ABIT IP35-E LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail - 119$ as my first time ever assembling a self built pc and I'm running into several problems with the processor and fan.

The first problem was while pressing down the latch on the cpu. After making sure the notches were correctly lined up I still had to press down VERY hard to get the arm down, almost like it was in the wrong way. I double checked twice before finally forcing it down to make sure the notches were lined up but judging from the pins it didnt look like the QQ6600 and P-35 were even a match because the male and female grooves looked nothing alike, not sure if this is normal.

The second thing that worried me the 4th pin of the fan ABSOLUTLEY would NOT go down. I applied extreme force to the point I thought any harder I would damage the motherboard.

The third problem I ran into was I put the fan over the processor right away and fastened 3 pins down and forgot to apply the Arctic Silver. I tried to remove the fan but the 3 pins seemed locked into place I can't figure out how to remove them.

I need advice how to get the fan back up and and what else I am doing wrong :(

hehehe
well if your using the stock intel hsf unit, look closely at the pins you will see that you have to twist the top in lock and unlock positions. that should help u get it off, and 99/100 times if it doesnt go in, ur putting it in wrong

arrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhh push pins.

Feel for you bud I hate them, it's actually best to install them on a mobo outside the case.

Now that its in and you want it out, if your heatsink is in the way, you'll need a long screwdriver just slot it into the groove at the top of the push-pin and turn and you'll get the click and you'll see it will be loose, i think its anti clockwise to loosen it but just turn it each direction until its loose, the push pins have a mechanism that make taking them out admittedly fiddly but not too difficult.

On the pressure to get the latch locked that's normal dont sweat it, the arrow (on your processor) should have been in the bottom left hand corner.

On the 4th pin not going down: play about with the pins (once you get the heatsink out) and get familiar with the mechanism and how it locks, so that when you put it in it is not already locked (which sounds like what happened here).

Its trial and error and only by doing do you gain experience of using these damn push-pins! :D

okay now i think somethings seriuosly F'd up. I figured out going couterclockwise and a screwdriver releases the pins and 2 of them came up with no problem. But the third pin when I twist it counterclockwise its making this hideous screech noise and if I try to twist it just keeps going around and around. The pin wont pop back up its stuck!

Just play about with it don't be afraid to but pressure on it but be careful the screwdriver doen't slip onto you mobo! lean into the groove to reduce the risk of this, it'll come eventually. Try tugging it with a slight amount of pressure and if all else fails take your mobo out and try that way.
