problems cloning drive

Hi, all
I decided to rma my old hd because it was running way too hot. I've just received the new one, but I've been having problems cloning it. I've used the wd tools and acronis true image, but both time I got an "error loading OS" message (I use xp home edition). I clone it the automatic way and then go to bios and set it as the first drive in the boot sequence. Am i missing something? Would a repair install of xp solve this? How can I check that the boot sector of the new drive is ok?
Any input is appreciated
 
When you first boot up the cloned drive, does it display Acronis's own thing first showing that it's fixing HD names and boot settings? Or does it go straight to your desktop?
 
I do see the setting up and copying of partitions, and I even get the "congratulations" screen. But when I disconnect the old drive and try to boot from the new one I get "error loading OS."

I tried to use the repair console in xp to fix the boot sector in the new drive, thinking that it might fix it. The weird thing is that it recognized the partition with the windows instalation as being E, and not C. I figured that when I cloned the drives, it would automatically recognize the sector with the OS as being C:. What am I doing wrong here?

Acronis should of changed that setting when you rebooted off the new cloned harddrive. Did you try letting it boot without taking your old hd out? It won't detect your old hd as the C: drive.

Here's how it should go.

1. Install Acronis
2. Run Acronis, set up which drives you want to copy over, etc.
3. Restart, Acronis runs its own thing, copying the partitions, etc.
4. Restart, Acronis fixes drive letters/boot info, etc.
5. Restart, boot into Windows XP.

At no time should you disconnect any of the drives.
 
did all that and I am still having the same problem. The new drive works as a slave ok, but not as the boot. Is there a free tool I can use to check the boot sector of a disk?

Hmm this is so very odd. I don't know of any software that checks the boot sector. Um what version of Acronis are you using?
 
I'm using acronis 9.
I think it is definetely a faulty boot sector in the new drive. I even tried installing a fresh version of windows on it, only to have the same problem...

Heh I guess you better RMA that POS. :p
 
I guess that's it, Im never buying western digital again. When the drive they sent me (after a 1 month delay) to replace a defective drive performs worse than the defective drive it is supposed to replace, you know there is something going on... :(
