okay so my laptop is the Best Buy Asus g73, got it about a year ago, give or take.

windows 7 is failing to boot. woke up one morning and it was on the startup repair screen, couldn't fix the problem. said the cause is a corrupt file. sorry i'm at work and can't get the exact data, i'll come back later from home and give the exacts if necessary.

a friend lent me his windows 7 cds (home premium, like mine, i just don't have my discs) so i could try to boot to windows and save my data before i reformat. it goes to startup repair but says there aren't any problems, and the only options i have from this point are to restart, go back to repair windows, or install new.

i have an external harddrive enclosure, and if i have to i can open up my laptop and back up my files the hard way, but i'd rather not. my question is: if i do a new install of windows, will it erase my data? and if not, should i still reformat after backing up my data?

also: any other suggestions?

thanks for your help
