ok i just bought a new case and cpu cooler for my existing setup but have since encountered some annoying problems:

1. i cannot install any OS because they all just freeze during the install process (xp, vista and win 7)
2. i have 4 gigs of ram but they show up as 2gb in bios
3. using all 4 gigs, during post my dram led light takes longer than usual to pass but it does eventually post ( i tried removing 1 stick but then the led would stay lit and my pc wont post)

i am not sure if both problems are related because i only encountered them after rebuilding my pc and these problems were not present before and everything ran smoothly for like 2 months

i have been trying to get win 7 ( vista, xp) to install for the past 4 days with no success, i am really frustrated and out of options so i though i should post for help.

specs:
i7 860 2.6 no overclocking done
asus p7p55d-e pro
kingston valueram at 1333 9-9-9-9-24
cm hyper 212 plus
pc power and cooling silincer 750w
saphire 5770
2 wd aals 640 drives
sony dvd-rw
haf 922

i hope someone helps me before i throw my pc out of the window!

You have cleared CMOS correct?

Now...the risks of transplanting to a new case can be many:

1. Are the mounting points in the right places? No extra screw mounts that do not align to a hole in the motherboard should be present as they can short out circuits on the board. This is because a lot of cases have mounts for various motherboard configurations beyond ATX and mini/micro ATX.

2. You have all the power supply connections on the board correctly right?

3. Did you remove the memory or CPU and then re-insert it during the transplant? If so, look for mem in the right slots, fully inserted, even bent pins on the CPU socket, etc...

4. Static electricity during the transplant can kill parts quickly, and you did this during winter months which makes the static problem MUCH worse.

Start with minimal config, half the mem, etc...then isolate good vs bad parts to find the culprit.

yes i checked all the above, the weird thing is i can post with 4 gigs but not 2 gigs of memory but then i cant install windows ..so am not sure is this software or a hardware related issue????

which slot did you have the single stick of ram in?
did you run memtest with both sticks installed? if so, for how long?

I tried 1 Stick in slots a1 and a2 but it won't post
I also ran memtest for 13 pasess using both sticks but no errors were found

ok i found the problem after doing a bare bones test.
i got my pc to post when i used one stick in the last slot b2
the problem seems to be that whenever i used slot a2 on the motherboard i could not get the pc to post so i am assuming that i have a faulty board but i want to make sure before i try to return it? can anyone confirm this?

thank you for your help guys

i checked the motherboard cpu pins but they seem okay nothing is bent or anything

According to your mobo manual, a single DIMM will only work in DIMM_A1 or DIMM_B1. The only time DIMM_A2 would be used is when you have four DIMMs. Also, if you haven't already, read §2.7 (pg 2-25 ) of your mobo manual -- I'm too lazy to read through it and ask you the proper questions. ;)

i am sorry i got mixed up

using 1 sick 2gb
in DIMM_A1 does not post and i get a constant RED led
in DIMM_B1 posts with no problem and i can use windows

using both sticks 4gb
in DIMMS A1 and B1 POSTS after a long constant red DRAM led but my windows would freeze at start up

i have tried both sticks in DIMM_A1 no post
i tried both sticks in DIMM_B1 they post
i did try the mem OK button but didn't help
i am assuming that the issue is the motherboard DIMM_A1

i hope this clears the confusion

so what can i do now?

did you clean the cpu and the hsf with alcohol and a lintfree wipe before applying the thermal paste, etc?

have you tried them? do they show the same issues as A1 and B1? or does it not work at all? if it works fine, I'd find 2 more sticks to test all 4 and see what happens. if it doesn't work fine, RMA the board and/or the RAM. If you can, memtest the RAM in another system.

when you ran memtest on both sticks, were they in A1/B1?

edit: before you send the board in for an RMA, inspect it closely; you may have nicked something while installing the new cooler/case. Also, were you doing any of this testing outside of the case? If not, do so, to rule out a possible short with the case, though unlikely.

If you haven't all ready , take the motherboard out of the case and test it on a non conductive surface. If it works you have a short in your case somewhere. Double check all your mounting posts to make sure they are in the correct places.
