Just got my card about 5 days ago, I've been running it at stock speeds and already on 4 occasions have gotten this error.

xfx6600gt_agp.jpg

Had to yell at the guy @ XFX Customer support to RMA my card he tried to tell me it was my brand new Antec 480w Truepower P.S. that was the problem  and yes I did connect the power to the video card. He even argued if it didn't happen during bootup then it wasn't the card. I asked him "how could it happen it bootup if its only happened 4 times in 120hours and only 2mins of that total was spent in the boot-up screen" Whatta dumbass.

Anyway just wondering if this was me or if anyone else was having problems.

Well, I have read more than a few complaints about quality control associated with XFX's cards, particularly the 6600 series. Check you power supply ect. but it looks like you will most likely have to RMA or return that card.

There have been problems with the XFX 6600s recently. I would try to return and get another vendor's card.

I was looking into getting an xfx 660 for a comp im building for a friend. its a buget gaming machine so were looking for a card with the best bang to the buck but after reading this it kinda scares me. Anyone know of any other agp 8x cards at a good price around ($200-250) aside from the 9800 pro?

You could still go with a 6600gt, I would just look at either eVGA or Leadtek (leadteck scored the highest)

Also I would check out a 6800 NU for around $240-250.

I would have RMA'ed with the place you got instead of directly with XFX, its usually faster and less of a hassle in the customer service department. I explained the problem I had with the very same card and the guy said welp here you go, have a RMA. Customer service at the actual manufacturer tends to get into solving the problem instead of handing out the RMA automatically. Just my 2 cents.

hey can you post a pic of your card - wondering if you have the reference cooler or the new one

same here
good luck

I got the updated model with the new cooler, its actually fairly quiet and the temps never reach beyond 60c underload. I am very happy with the performance, but these sporadic screens are unacceptable. I'm rma'ing it with the store I bought it from, but they still made me call XFX to get a case number. I've heard some bad things about XFX quality control as well just hope the 2nd one is not a dud..

Not sure if you went with newegg, but the bastards will usually charge you a restocking fee :(

Newegg only charges a restocking fee on returns for refund, not repair.
http://www.newegg.com/app/faq_return.asp

And often if you send them an e-mail and ask them to waive the restocking fee they will as long as you make up a decent excuse - they've done it for me several times. ;)

I bought from tigerdirect, no restocking fee and they are going to send me a free replacement and also pay for me to ship back the defective.

I would believe a bad psu under the following conditions:

Less then the required 350w - nope not here

Low 12v rail - nope Antec 480w = 30amp 12v rail more than enough.

Problem occured in 3d where more power is necessary - Nope happended again today in 2d mode.

Problem could be replicated when 12v line was not connected to the video card - Nope, could not replicate the problem.

Wow, nice overclock, mine wasn't even stable past 1.1ghz ram 550mhz core. There is obviously something wrong.

No there isn't. Not everyone will achieve the same overclock. No two cards have exactly the same OC potential. Even if they did that doesn't mean they have the same OC potential in two different systems.

damn, how long ago did you guys buy these, I making a friend a PC and I found a nice deal on XFX 6600GT, but now im worried

LOL, I've been overclocking since my 486DX2 66mhz @ 100mhz your makin it sound like I''m a nub. not even stable at a mere 10% OC is crap.

I don't think he said anything about your ability, he was just stating the fact that no product is guaranteed to overclock.

I don't know about XFX itself, but NVidia's own forums are teeming with people listing chipsets/motherboards with which the PEG 6600 is incompatible- like, lots of i865PE boards, for example. What is the rest of your rig running?

BTW, I wish someone would write a program like MemTest for video RAM- I have this strong suspicion that lots of today's problems are caused by this component, and could even believe that yours is.

...Yes and no...
I'm not a noob, but I have almost always gotten stuff that runs 10% or over out of spec, as long as I can remember. I'm actually pissed at my current motherboard for hiccuping at anything over a 205FSB, because my first DFI (NF2 Ultra) could handle FSBs into the 230s before the CPU couldn't keep up.

CPUs:
P3 Coppermine 1GHz/133@1.25, easy
P4 2.4C@3.55 on water, 3.2 stock HSF
AXP2500+ Locked Desktop@2.4ish, stock HSF

GPUs/VPUs:
R9700Pro@380/340 (bad OC on RAM, and still not that bad)
R9800Pro (R350)@420/400
GFFX5950U@500/500 stock everything, just because I wanted a round number. I'm sure I could have broken 530 if I'd added voltage in BIOS.
Current: GF6800@400/800, modded to 16/6

Always using stock cooling, no vmods or anything.

Well, i'm not going to get in a whole thing here and wreck a thread, but to say something is crap because it doesn't run over what it's spec'ed at(whether it's 10%, 20%, or 1%) is very ignorant. If you want a video card that runs faster than a 6600gt, poney up some more money and buy a better one. Don't buy a 6600gt that runs at the speeds written on the box, and then call it crap because it doesn't go faster. the manufacturer doesn't make it with that in mind.

That I can agree with.

blah blah blah, first it doesn't even run properly @ spec secondly, we know very well most hardware is overclockable, infact most people who bought an XFX reported between 15-20% overclocks which is why I went with XFX since they appeared to be such great performers, atleast on the forums.

I have an XP-M 2500 @ 2.6ghz thats 47% over spec
ABIT NF7-Sv2 @ 230fsb 15% over spec
Hyperx Ram 15% over spec can easily reach 25% over

I've been overclocking before you even got your first computer, I had my celeron 300A @ 504mhz just cause I'm new to the forum doesn't mean I"m new to the game. I strategically buy my hardware to run overspec, sure its only made to run @ spec, but get real any TRUE overclocker would be disappointed they aren't running atleast 10% over, now go back to playing with your intel cpu running at specs, your not an overclocker, your comment says it all. New board on the way, I thought this forum was for [hard] overclockers some of you sound like wussies.

overclocking only comes to those with luck. i have a 6600GT and i bought with the thought of overclocking it in the near future when i have to..
you show me where its guarenteed on the box it will clock over 10%

So in other words, through your countless years of experience, this is the first time you've run into a piece of hardware that doesn't overclock well? First time? Well, guess you were bound to get your cherry popped at some point newbie.

edit: If it doesn't run well at specs than you have a legitimate beef. But talking with somebody of your experience i'm sure you've eliminated all the common culprits like driver conflicts, psu instability, and heat issues. So in other words, if you're positive you have a bad card, what's the problem? Manufacturing flaws happen. RMA it and be done with it.

fwiw
I think Brians 1st post and picture says it all.
Seems like he got a bad card period.
Not just a card that won't overclock but a card that won't run within specs.
While non overclockability is in itself no reason for a rma, less than normal fucntionality is.
IF this was one of the more seasoned [titled] posters of this forum with the same situation most people would have been more sympathetic to their lament.
This is the fucking OVERCLOCKERS site isn't it?
The guys HAS a reasonable expectation that the card will work and oc somewhat.
I've seen people rma hardware because they didn't like the freakin color of the pcb!
Nobody said shit. Now this guy has noobie written under him and everybody is holding him to some higher standard.
Bullshit.

*New Tosser* :) With some BUCKS....

Hello ppl.
I have a sensible question about the 6600GT card and its manufacturers. OK, my problem is i want to OC my new GT card to best way i can. I am currently looking at Leadtec Winfast TDH and the XFX card. The XFX has a 1000 memory clock advantage in comparison with the Leadtec at just 900. All cards have different clock speeds no matter what manufacturer but can Leadtec still out-perform the XFX due to this ?
I've heard problems with XFX and especially with Leadtec in the past, (its bad drivers) but then again its been nothing but gold rewards for the Leadtec at the moment.
I.m more an ATI man so bare with me for my n00bish question,
Thx.

i got a leadtek 6600gt
i think it fried with just 3 or 4 days of use. about 6 or 7 hours a day continously.
i was playing a game (NFSU2) and all of sudden my screen would go black with my case fans and such still running, so i thought the computer froze....restarted the system booted up the game again played for about 2 minutes, freeze again....restarted again...this time ran a benchmark to see if things were stable...then my computer turns off fans, harddrives, everything in the middle of the benchmarking and won't turn on again. until i changed to my trusty old nvidia vanta TNT, that thing is relaible it's like a turtle it's slow but it gets to the finish line everytime.
So now i have to RMA the leadtek too newegg
the card was running pretty smooth too, too bad it had to fry on me

The memory modules on the 6600GT cards are usually the 2.0ns modules so they are all rated at 1ghz anyway, leadtek is just goin with the nvidia reference for the 900mhz speed for the agp versions. The mem should have the same chance of overclocking up over 1.1ghz as all the other cards. Also since all the cores in these cards are the same there isn't goin to be a big performance advantage with one card over any other. There will be differences if the clocks are different obviously but you won't see 6800GT performance out of an overclocked card either.

Also you guys need to watch yourselves and be very careful about handling the cards cause the heatsinks are not attached securely. When I got my first card I accidentally unseated the heatsink on the HSI and I didn't even have more than a few pounds of pressure on it when it moved. I was shocked. I feel like perhaps these HSFs coming unseated could be a reason why so many people are having fried cards after a week or so. Just my thoughts.

Whichever one has the highest memory speeds by default will win, unless you want to get into OCing. In this case, it's luck of the draw with ANY manufacturer.

As an ATI man, I presume you are already familiar with their unified driver architecture, which goes under the name Catalyst. NVidia's cards have the same idea, and may even have been the first ones to use this- ForceWares, which used to go under the Detonator moniker. Leadtek, XFX, and everyone else all use these drivers, and the only difference in software (with regard to functionality) is which overclocking/monitoring program they bundle. In this regard, even the ForceWares make provisions: run a search for Coolbits.
