here's my problem:

I would like to take out the first Microsoft Windows XP home edition because it does not work anymore. Basically, I reinstalled windowXP on my exisiting partition which already had windowsXP home. The new installation overwrote the previous but before I startup the system it still asks me to select an operating system. Thanks in advance.

Simple, REFORMAT THE DRIVE, then load XP....
.= Clean drive, clean XP clean and fast PC...FROM THE GET GO. If you try and "fix" it you will be fighting conflict errors for days until you final quit.. and REFORMAT. save time and hassle.

I formated, reinstalled windows but that menu still shows up. Deleted all the partitions too.

the only time that happened to me was when I loaded the xp disc without deleting the entire HD. I guess youll need to boot to the xp disc and re-delete everything and reload. what a pain in the butt. I just spent all last night doing the same thing and reloading everything. Good luck

Or you could just remove the erroneous entry from the boot.ini

I think thats what i need to do. Not sure how, but I'll check it out. Btw, I'm using a Dell 8400.

Doesn't matter what type of computer you have, it's a simple fix really.

Right-click My Computer and select Properties. Then go to Advanced, then click Settings under Startup and Recovery. You can do one of two things at this point.

1. The Right way
Click Edit and delete the very last line entirely and save it. If that's the working Windows install then delete the line directly above it.

Example:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn <--- Delete this one and save it in your case.
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

2. The Easy way that sometimes gets reset
Uncheck the box labled Time to display list of operating systems. Just make sure in the drop down box up above you select the second one (the working one according to your post) first to mark it as the default.
