Hi all ,

I can't get my wi fi to work properly .

i am with Virgin and have a netgear router.

I have a main PC with two remote set ups - one desk top and one laptop.

The remote desktop works fine wirelessly but the laptop refuses to connect.

i'm not a technical person but will try to explain.

when i connect the laptop directly to my router via Ethernet all is well.

a good connection and i can use the internet normally.

My wi fi connection also says it is connected and has an excellent signal strength but Explorer will not work.

I have tried to repair it and to renew the IP but that does not work .

in the Internet Protocol properties i am sending packets but recieving none

I spent some time on the phone to a helpline but they could not sort it out .

has anyone got any ideas of anything else i can try ,

regards,

MP

What OS are you running? Are you using the windows wireless networking utility or a vendor supplied utility? What encryption are you using for the wireless connection? Have you tried re-entering your security key?

From what you describe it sounds like you have typed in your wireless key incorrectly. I have seen this same problem hundreds of times. What I usually recommend people do is type out the key in notepad, then copy and paste that into the wireless router configuration and also into the wireless connection on your computer to make absolutely sure they are the same.

Also check the TCP/IP settings for the wireless adapter - you probably should be using DHCP.
I think that option is labeled something like "Obtain address information automatically".
Make sure that option is selected

To do this: go control panel >> Network Connections>> rightclick on the wireless connection and choose properties, scroll down to find TCP/IP, highlight it and choose properties, and the option should be on the second tab.

most commonly this would be the laptop getting an IP out of range. So try setting up a static IP.

ok , guys thanks for all the prompt replies ,

As i said before i am not technical so i will try to reply to some of your points

OS is XP Pro

Encryption is WEP . Haven't tried re-entering the security key but will do so this evening. Thanks for the notepad hint.

Tried a static ip but no luck . My bedroom desktop PC does have a static IP.

Machine says DHCP is enabled

also forgot to say that

I Tried turning off windows firewall but that didn't help

The new connection i made now states "limited or no connectivity" as opposed to "connected signal strength excellent " as it did before .

i'm still sending packets but receiving none
