Problem with Thermaltake V1 heatsink

Hi all,

I think there is a problem with my setup, maybe i am missing something here. I just got a thermaltake v1 heatsink ( link here ) and I have just installed it - cleaned off previous thermal pad / grease, and applied arctic silver 5. My idle temperature is about 30, pretty good i guess, but what concerns me is the load temp. My processor is an AMD Phenom II X4 965, and running prime95 torture test using all 4 cores to 100% pushes the temp beyond 60 degrees. Because I didn't want any further damage I stopped the test when the core temps hit 60, but it looks like it could have gone further. I'm pretty sure this is not normal lol. I've read some reviewers say their core i7 only gets up to 48. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I severely doubt that anyone has been able to keep i7 load temps at 48 and below with the v1. In fact, I sort of wonder if the V1 is actually an old heat sink. Most of the reviews that I've seen test it with a core 2 duo, and in one case even a pentium 4, lol. I couldn't even find anything that used it with an i7.

Anyway, from what I have read, the max operating temp for your cpu is 62C, so not good. Did you use too much arctic silver? Is it seated properly? Is it making good contact with your cpu? Are you overclocking at all? How is the airflow in your case? What case are you using? How are the temperatures in your room? What kind of temperatures were you getting with the original heat sink? When I had the v1 I discovered that one of the pushpins wasn't clamping all the way down because of a physical blockage, so it was only making contact with half of my cpu. You may also want to look at a better heat sink, unless they have made improvements or revisions since it was released (again, it looks to be a couple of years old, but I'm not sure what its history is).

yeah im not sure how accurate it is either, they are reviews posted on newegg.

"I have not seen my phenom II 955 get hotter then 43c while running games not any louder then the fan on the dresser about 4 feet behind me, also fits very well in my antec 900"

"Pros: Keeps my 955 at 35 under full load idle is about 29 or 30"

"Keeps my Core i7 extreme 965 between 29-48 Celcius depending on load using Artic Silver."

I also just read this review going through a couple of them -

"Cons: Mount for AM2 is extremely annoying. What makes it more annoying is that the cooler itself performs so poorly out the box i had to remount it multiple times. I was getting 62C+ on a OC'd X4 @ 3.6. Previous cooler was an Arctic 64 92mm (which did better). Cooler is a joke out of the box, especially for the price.

Other Thoughts: FOR THOSE WITH HIGH TEMPS - You must disassemble the heatsink base (four screws) and add thermal compound between the heat pipes and the base. It comes without the high temperate solder type stuff that my AC 64 cooler had. Doing this dropped my temps 15C - but it should of been done for me."

I've never heard of having to do this though.

To answer your questions, I didn't use much arctic silver at all - a very small amount right in the middle, spread out to make a very thin layer. As far as I can tell the base is making good contact (but i'm not positive) - I have actually taken it off, cleaned it, reapplied thermal, and reinstalled with the same result. I am not overclocking at all - everything is stock. The airflow is good (i think) in my case, I have a 120mm front intake, a 120mm outtake blowhole above the heatsink, and the heatsink is blowing out the back of my case. I am using the coolermaster storm scout (here). With the stock processor heatsink, I was getting just slightly hotter idle, and load had the same result - too hot to test, shut it down close to 60. Since my processor's an AMD 965 the installation is just the supplied "AM2/K8 clip." Ambient air is about 22C. The only thing I have not done yet is lap the heatsink, but I don't have the sandpaper materials for it yet. Thanks for your help.

what speed is the fan running? crank it up if it's too low.

reseat/reapply the heatsink I guess. Reviews around net seem okay.

its on highest setting when i test load

thanks but i've tried that twice now

i contacted thermaltake about this. they responded with information on RMA - should i just return this? i dont want to waste money shipping if there's something i can do to fix this myself.

i have just received the new product after RMAing the first one -

i cleaned off the old thermal compound, applied a thin layer of arctic silver 5, installed the heatsink .. im getting the exact same problem again. The idle temperature is an acceptable 30C, but once i start prime95 the core temperature shoots up to 60C in 30 seconds to 1 minute. I shut off prime95 at this point. What is going on???? I know lapping the heatsink base can shave off 5C but this is ridiculous. Am I missing something here? I've taken it off and reinstalled it multiple times making sure there is perfect contact between the base and the cpu.

Those push pin retainers are the worst. It's one thing if you are putting every thing together on the bench with plenty of room, but for in-case installs (which I don't recommend if at all possible), it's damn near impossible in some of the smaller / tighter mid-size cases to get your hands on there positively.

If you are sure the cooler is on there firmly (just give it a slight tug on all corners) and it is still hitting those temps, I would just return it and try a different cooler.
