Problem with Saitek command pad

I just purchased a Saitek command pad and I'm quite pleased with it so far, except I have a problem with the shift states on the command pad and am hoping someone here has the soltuion. It seems the shift state selectors refresh the keystroke too quickly, meaning if I hold the button down for more than half a second, the shift state flickers back and forth. This is quite problematic, as the buttons are not sensative enough to detect quick presses, meaning to ensure the mode is switched in game, I have to hold the button down for about 1 second (as there is no indicator light displaying which state the pad is in). Have any other owners of this board experienced this problem and have a solution? I am very very pleased with the keyboard itself, and am looking forward to utilizing the command pad for all that I can, but the way it stands it is not functional beyond the "clear" mode.
