Problem with Playback Devices settings in Windows 10

When I plug in my headphones and set them as default playback device, then unplug them, set my Realtek Digital Output as default playback device, there is no audio signal. In the Windows>Playback Devices, I see both Realtek Digital Output and Realtek Digital Output(Optical) as options. Neither appears to work now, either when testing or when using as default playback device. I have reset the SPDIF connection and rebooted, but it doesn't help.

I've reset the SPDIF connection between my speakers and the computer, so they are plugged in. When I run troubleshooting, Windows is telling me that no speakers are plugged in.

Basically, it seems that plugging in USB headphones screws up Windows' ability to correctly recognize my SPDIF digital speakers that are connected once I try to switch back.

Not sure how to proceed.
