Problem with new computer

I recently bought new computer parts and received them this morning. I put everything together and then turn on the power. The CPU fan starts, but I can't see anything on the screen. After 5 seconds, everything stops. I try to turn the power back on, and nothing at all happens.

Any idea what happened and what I could do now?

Thank you very much

Processor: AMD XP 2500+
Fan/Heatsink: Kingwin KCU-7015
Motherboard: Chaintech 7VIF4
Power Supply: 400W ATX12V (came with case)

Remove everything except for the CPU, RAM, and video card. No drive cables connected, try to boot and see if you get through a POST or any beep codes.

Could be a bad mobo, hook up the HDD and see if you hear it "hitting" the drive. If it isn't, then more than likely it is dead. I've had a couple of DOA mobo, seems to be a common problem.

Still not working.

The power supply doesn't work at all. So I tried to use an old one (250w) and it didn't work either.. Is it possible that the powersupply fried the motherboard??

:(

A bad stick of RAM will do that sometimes too.

Do what the guy above said. CPU, m0b0, and ram and try to get it to post. Also check and make sure your motherboard doesn't have any jumpers that have to be set.

What Primea said. The best way to begin troubleshooting is eliminating every unneccessary component, including the case which could be causing shorts.

I tried it outside of the case (on anti-static bag) and it didn't work. Am I screwed?

Thanks for the help, very appreciated :)

you are if you did it on a static bag. theyre coated in metal. try it on something that WONT conduct.

I'm a little confused. You mean you turn it on and after 5 seconds it shuts down, then you try to restart and the same thing happens or it won't restart at all the second time?

Try reseating the cpu.

Also remember you can troubleshoot for hours and hours but if the mobos is faulty it will never work, you gotta call it quits and RMA it before you spend too much time trying to fix something that can't be fixed.

take the heat sink off and put it back on. i had this problem when i was building a pc for my parents.

sometimes the heatsinks dont seat right, which causes it to turn off after 5 seconds or so (when it starts gettting hot)

It wouldn't restart at all the 2nd time.

If the PSU fried the motherboard; Will my processor and RAM be okay?

(sorry for all the n00b questions)

Why do you think the PSU fried the mobo?
Did you try reseating the CPU?

If you've tried everything these guys have suggested, you might try as a last resort clearing the CMOS or removing the battery for a couple of minutes. If that doesn't fix it, the outlook is quite grim I'm afraid. Good luck.

Yes, I tried to reseat the cpu.

I think the PSU fried the mobo, because when I tried another PSU (from my old computer), it didn't work either.

Well, I guess I'll have to RMA

Or the mobo could just be bad.
