Problem with new AVA machine

I just received my new System from AVA last week and after about 3 hours of using it I got a blue screen while playing Crysis. When the comp restarted I got an error that said "Disk Read Error Occured, Press CTRL + ALT + Delete to Restart" I tried restarting again and got the same error. I tried running startup repair from the Vista disk but it didn't fix anything so I decided to go ahead and reformat and reinstall windows. After reinstalling windows the computer ran great for about 2 days and then while I was checking my email it locked up again and had to restart only to get the same disk read error.

I called AVA after the first lock up but by the time they got back with me I thought i had it fixed by reinstalling windows. I plan on calling back Monday to see what my options are and maybe see if I can just get a replacement hard drive or if its an error somewhere else in the system. I really hope that i can get this fixed ASAP because after first dealing with IBUYPOWER and getting a defective machine and now this I'm really tired of messing with this stuff over and over again, kinda wish I would have just kept my old Dell.

BTW system specs are:
I7 920
ASUS P6t Deluxe
3GB Corsair Dominator 1600mhz
WD 640GB HD :(
9800gt superclocked
 
I've ran CHKDSK and used Western Digital Lifeguard tool to do an extended test and both say the drive has no problems. When I ran Startup repair it said it attempted to fix errors but never did anything after running for over an hour.
 
Sorry to read of the bad experience, xbrainer.

I'd like to offer help, unfortunately the problem you describe is one I'm not aware of.

Do hope your situation gets resolved.
 
xbrainer, did they overclock your i7 920 at all? If they did, and left the volts at auto, that could be an issue.

no overclocking and everything in the bios was set to defaults, I've tried different settings that were suggested to others after searching google but none have changed anything.
 
send the system back and call visa for a chargeback...as long as you have a ups receipt and a delivery confirmation from AVAdirect visa is on your side.


then order all the parts from newegg and start a whole new adventure

So nothing was overclocked? Because the P6T Deluxe can only run use 1600mhz RAM if you overclock.
 
He's most likely not talking about what the ram is actually running at Misfate but just what the ram he bought is rated as. The board works fine with that ram, it'll just underclock it from what it is rated as if it is stock.
 
I am using the XMP profile and i believe the BCLK is set to 133. I was wondering though, Plug and Play O/S was disabled at default would this cause a problem like this?

Nothing a little memtest86 cant figure out. Use that to test your ram. If it comes up clean, its the hard drive. If the ram is spitting up errors that is their fault (IMO). They should have tested that! if it isn't and the hd is screwed up, that is just life. Mechanical hard drives have fairly high failure rates. Nothing can be done about that.
 
Thanks Joe, I left Chris a message on the extension he gave me last week.

I wanted to run memtest86 but didnt exactly know how and had no RW-CD around so I'll wait and see what they suggest. Im not ready to jump down AVA's throat about this because it seems like the comp works fine for a few days on a clean install and randomly just dies, it would have been hard to find this error without using it for some time.
 
That particular error usually has something to do with the MBR in the partition. I can research more if you you still have problems.

If you want to test your memory but don't want to use mem-test or make a boot disk, try the Vista Memory Diagnostic tool right in Windows. Just click start and type in memory diagnostic, and it should pop right up. If you can't boot to the O/S because of crashes, you can also run the mem-tool from the recovery tools on the Vista Install DVD.

Also, when you BSOD you'll get some error code towards the middle bottom, usually something like 0x0FFC5000F3 blah blah blah. If it happens again, write that code down and post it here. It's easy to look those up and see exactly what Windows was complaining about before it BSODed. Vista default to reboot automatically on a BSOD, which is easy enough to change in the System Properties/Advanced Tab/Startup and Recovery.
 
Well after speaking with Chris on the phone and him checking a few things he had me run memtest for 3 hours and it just finished with no errors. I guess the only thing that leaves is the HD or MB. I was going to write down the error when it blue screened but it flashed way to fast :(.
 
Dude please stop screwing with them and get a refund if you even still can... They wont be able to fix your machine as they have no ability to diagnose the actual issue let alone any real ability to do the repair work... AVA can put a comp together nicely but thats where it all ends... GET A REFUND WHILE YOU CAN!!!!!!

If it's not the mem, which makes sense as your error is a HDD one, I'd really suggest booting into WinRE and running chkdsk.

Are you always getting the MBR error, "Boot Disk not Detected, press CTR ALT DEL," or only sometimes?
 
normally in this situation I would refund as I did with Ibuypower but I can't be without a computer now because I go to Ohio University and send in a lot of my assignments through email and I'm taking an online course. I just spoke with Chris again and he has agreed to send a new 1TB drive which should ship today (will hopefully arrive tommorrow as I only live a few hours away) and I'll see if that fixes the problem.

CraftyChicken, I only get the error it seems when the system locks up and I have to perform a Hard Shutdown. Once the error does show up however, the only way to get back into windows was to reformat and reinstall. I tried running chkdsk the first time it happened and it showed no errors, but the second time it said something about a bad 0cylinder? Another thing I noticed was when I reformatted after getting back into windows it said something about a missing PCI driver but I can open up Device Manager and it looks fine. Windows also said there was a problem with the chipset driver after the reformat and linked me to an intel program that tried to update but it said the version I was updating to was older than the one on the ASUS P6T disk.
 
Normally I'd say that it's the company's responsibility to install the drive,but given their track record here with RMA work,you're probably better off installing it yourself!:D
 
Just to play devil's advocate... I'm sure they would fix it if he shipped it back, but the OP did state he needs to be up and running ASAP, and obviously can handle the install himself.
 
Ok just got another BSOD while trying to launch Dawn of War 2 beta and this time it lasted long enough for me to write down this error number 0x0000007e (0xffffffff0000005) and dxgkrnl.sys were all in the error message. There were a few other number strings after the 0xffffffff0000005 but i couldnt get them in time. after the BSOD went away it restarted and windows loaded fine (suprisingly) and a message popped up that said windows had shutdown unexpectedly.

I havent received the new drive yet but I have a hard time believing my hard drive would cause this error. I also ran another memtest last night before i went to bed and woke up and let it run through 20 passes which took 10 hours and no errors. Also I have no problem installing things like hard drives and graphics cards on my own, the only thing that I wouldnt feel comfortable doing would be the MB, which seems like may be the problem considering I also just realized it doesnt want to hold my bios settings for some reason.
 
there should be a flat battery on the mb... find out what type of battery it is from the mb manual and go to walgreens or whatever you have in your area and buy the battery.

follow mb manual in how to replace battery.

if the mb isnt keeping the bios settings you have... that would be the reason.
 
ok just got the new drive but havent installed yet because I want to see what this error means, Also I figured out that my MB only loses bios settings if its unplugged which seems to be a problem among alot of P6T Deluxe boards (way to go ASUS :rolleyes:) This would mean that the settings AVA applied to the bios were reset during shipping. I thought it was a little funny that when I first started it up that the bios had not been touched.
 
Once you get things sorted out, in the BIOS under "tools" way over on the right, you should have the opportunity to save "profiles".

That way if the BIOS resets you can load up your working profile without having to go through each BIOS categoty.

Man, it seems like AVA machines are cursed.......deja-vu, all over again. Quack.:eek:

Pew pew sounds a lot like what sounds you made as a kid when you're shooting your laser gun. Not really sure what it's actually referencing but I am sure there are tons of YouTube videos discussing internet or gaming slang.

edit: does me knowing this make me l33t? If so, then I have NO idea what QQ and pewpew mean.
