problem with my "new" p4

Hi,

I currently have a celeron D 2.4ghz (yeah it's crappy.. damn celeron...) and bought a P4 3.0ghz FSB 800 512ko from ebay(supposed to be new.. highly doubt it...), my motherboard is an Asus P4P800, it accepts a FSB 800. But when i install it, after the bios boots, when normally windows xp start booting, all i have is a black screen with a white bar flashing. Cannot even boot from a cd with it. When i installed it, the bios told me that there was a new cpu, and if i wanted to set it in the bios, but i have nothing to set and it recognize the cpu anyway... Do you think it's absolutely sure the cpu is dead/not good? Or is there another possibility?

Tomorrow i'll try it on my friends board...

i tried resetting the factory default on my bios, but nothing... i have 2 sets of ddr, one 2*512 pc3200 and one 2*256 pc2100, tried with one set and the other but nothing also :S

Take out the 2 256 2100 ddrs. For P4 I think you need 2700 or 3200 to run them.
I would do is use the 3200s and clear the bios and see if that works.

If not.. then it might be dead.


Edit: wild thought.. What power supply do you have?

Sounds like Windows files corruption to me. (blinking white underscore (cursor) in the upper left hand corner means the system is TRYING to load files) File corruption and/or hard drive failure/failing.

Have you tried putting the old Celeron back in to see if your system will go into Windows?

Give that a try, if it does... backup your personal data.
If you get the same results (blinking cursor), the files are corrupted or the hard drive is borked. You should be able to boot off the CDROM (as long as it is set to be a boot device in the BIOS) regardless of your hard drive's condition.

Replace celeron with P4 3.0 and boot from a Windows CD to try a clean install.

800FSB requires PC-3200 unless you are willingly running a RAM divider (silly to do at stock speeds)

My dad's desktop had the problem with the blinking white underscore in the upper left hand corner and if you waited a really long time it would finally load Windows. It turned out that all it needed was a BIOS update and it completely fixed it.

Take out the 2 256 2100 ddrs. For P4 I think you need 2700 or 3200 to run them.
I would do is use the 3200s and clear the bios and see if that works.

My power supply is an Antec 450watt (to one that comes with the Sonata II cases), i tried doing so with only the 3200, but didn't work(if i remember correclty... i'll try it again tomorrow. Stupid question but just to be sure, to clear the BIOS, i only have to select the reset option in it, or do i have to do something with jumpers?(like clearing the CMOS)??

I cannot even boot from a cd, after the bios recognize my drives/keyboard/etc, it goes to that black screen with a blinking white underscore no matter what i set has first boot device. I'm currently running my computer with the celeron and everything works great(as great as a celeron can do....).

The first time i reinstalled the celeron it did it, but for like 5second... I'll try letting it "work" longer and also only with the pc3200.

When i reinstalled my celeron, the bios warned me that i failed an overclocking(since i went from 3ghz to 2.4 i guess) i guess it's normal..
I'll try all those things tomorrow night...

I really hope it will work, would be REALLY pissed if it didnt....(btw someone knows if i have a time delay to get back at the ebay seller?)

To reset the bios you need to reset cmos. Typically the cmos jumper is located next to the "big watch battery" on your motherboard. What you want to do is unplug power to your pc, then there should be 3 pins with 2 already jumpered. In other words it should look like this (I = Pin, J = Jumpered pin) I J J, take the jumper off and short the pins that wren't shorted out before, now it should look like this J J I, press and hold the power button, then press the power button a couple of times just to kill any remaining power, do this for about 10 seconds, then move the jumper back to it's original setting, I J J.

Next set your cd-rom drive to be first in your boot order. Boot off the windows xp cd, and do a repair install (not chkdsk /r) How you do this is whenever it prompts you to press ESC for a clean install, Press R for Repair.....Press ESC, then Press F8 to agree, then instead of deleting or creating any new partition, press r to run a Repair install.

Try those and let me know how everything works out!

PXE allows you to boot from your NIC.

well.. i'm PISSED!
Flashed the BIOS.... went fine!
Cleared the CMOS... went fine! (well nothing can really go wrong here... i think)
Installed the P4 with only the PC3200..... The computer didn't even boot!(everything started, but the monitor got no signal, and mouse/keyboard were also "dead"). So the cpu is dead.. i'll try to get back at the ebay seller.. hope to have my money back :S...

(rest of the system is fine, since i'm running it right now with my celery without problem...)

You've gotten unlucky.

Every piece of hardware I've sold has been working 100%, and I've sold TONS. I've also purchased quite a bit of hardware (mainly laptop stuff) on eBay and it always works just fine...
