Problem with my DVD/CD Drive?

I've been having problems lately watching DVDs and listening to CDs on my PC. When I put a disk in, sometimes it just about freezes whatever media player im using and the disks might play but skip, not just little bits but large chunks of the disk, if they start to play in the first place which they many times don't.

Sometimes it works perfectly well though. But It's been happenning more lately to the point where it almost never works.

Data disks seem to work but usually take awhile for me to be able to access them and sometimes the window freezes up for a few seconds every once in awhile.

I changed out the IDE cable with another and tried the other IDE slot on my mobo. I also have tried a few different media players. None of this has helped. Does this sound like my drive? I don't have any spares to check it but, thats the only thing I can think of.

I have a Sony DRU-720A if that helps, I don't know if they are known for problems or anything.
Any help? Thanks
