I have a problem on my computer. I just got cable high speed internet and when i try going on a website or anything that deals with the internet, my computer automatically reboots. I tried formating my computer like 3 times already. And it still keeps on rebooting by itself.

Can anyone give me suggestions or help on why it keeps doing that.

Is it because my operating system (I'm using Windows XP PRO)?
Is it because I need to install some virus protection, firewall, pop-up blocker, or something?


PLEASE HELP ME ASAP. I NEED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM ASAP.

In any event, try a virus scan. NOD32 has a 30 day trial, and is undeniably the best av scanner.
 
Are you getting an error or a blue screen, and then it reboots, or are you getting the timed reboot message from the above post?

If it's from the above post, anytime it pops up, go to start > run and type the following.

shutdown -a
 
Step 1, you need to do a virus and spyware scan using the programs in my signature, make sure to update them ALL before using them. Make sure to use all of them too :).

Step 2, go to www.windowsupdate.com and make sure you have all the windows updates. Download all the critical updates.

Step 3, repeat step 1.

Step 4, if you are just connected directly into a cable modem, instead of through some kind of router or something, go get some kind of firewall software , like zonealarm or something :).

Step 5, If this stuff is still a problem, please come let us know how steps 1-4 went :). Also, please give more information. Is the computer just shutting off, just rebooting, or are you getting a message like above before it reboots.
 
im not getting an error or blue screen. It just shuts down by itself without any notice. It does it when i try going on a website or something that has to deal with the internet.
 
Ok, please use my steps above first, and let us know how that goes.

Is it ANY webpage that makes it shut down, or only certain ones? I once saw a computer that would do that on ANY flash webpage. We wound up formatting and reinstalling windows, because we couldn't figure out what the hell was going on :).

Well you managed to get on here to post about your problem. So as asked above does you PC reboot when going to any/all websites or just some? I assume if it reboots every time you try to go to a webpage you can’t even get to windows update?

I see that you said you formatted and reinstalled windows like 3 times already. If you really did a format and reinstall I can’t imagine the problem being a virus on that computer.

Also since you posted your problem on here I am wondering if you have a network setup with more the one PC? If so then try removing all other computers from the network first. Now while they are disconnected be sure to run a virus scan on them. A friend of mine has a network set up at his house and one of the children managed to get some nasty virus on his PC. It was causing all sorts of problems for the other computers on the network. This virus wasn’t detected by his AV software until the PC was removed from the network.

Average time for a virus to get onto a brand new computer connected directly to a cable modem is 3 minutes. If he formatted and re-installed, but then didn't get any windows updates, and is connected directly to a cable modem, he could very well be getting the same virus every time.

If this isn't a software problem, its possible that your power supply or motherboard is going bad. Especially if its an onboard network card.
 
Direwolf is correct. If he reformatted, but the virus is still floating on his ISP's network, it will re-infect his machine everytime he brings it back online until the system is patched and AV shields are updated to catch it. This is how Sasser worked.
 
I'm guessing its my power supply. I have a 420w Thermaltake power supply. and I'm running a motherboard, 2 hard drives, creative lab sound card, ati video card, 2 vantec fans with a fan controller and 2 blue cold cathodes, cd burner, and floppy drive. Do you guys think it turns off by itself because it can't handle the wattage im running? and is there any program where i can check how much wattage im running on this computer?

Dammit, if that's not almost sigworthy.

Is it only when it connects to the net? For example: you install Windows, click on IE, machine tries to surf, and then crashes? Or, is it on ANY network traffic such as browsing another machine on a LAN? Just questions to think about.

You might also think about trying another NIC in there to rule out the NIC having issues.

 
I installed Windows, click on IE, machine tries to surf, and then reboots on its own. I'm not using a NIC, I'm using a USB
 
Check to make sure that you have all the right chipset drivers installed, including those for the USB ports.

Also, you mention rebooting. If you haven't done so, right-click my computer > properties > advanced > startup and recovery > settings > uncheck automatically reboot, then reboot. This should make it so that when you keep getting these fatal errors, you should at least get to see the blue screen and associated data.

Also, check your event logs to see if anything is happening there.

Try another NIC. I've never been partial to USB NIC adapters (though I know that they work perfectly well, call me stubborn).

If you can get an alternative browser on there, try it and see what happens.

And, seriously, if you're not joking 1) this is a candidate for thread lock (thus all help stops) and 2) stop being cheap and get a real copy.
