I have a system that i built about 2 or 3 years ago. Just recently while i was on it, the monitor lost its signal and went into standby mode while i was using it, usually just touching a key or moving the mouse will make it go out of standy mode but it wouldnt respond. So i restarted the computer and it all of the colors were dull on the monitor and the pointer was not moving smoothly across the screen, it was just jumping from place to place. I turned it off and started it back up a couple hours later and my monitor wont get any signal at all from the computer. I tried another monitor and it didnt work either. I dusted the computer out and nothing. I tried buying a new video card and that didnt work either. Does anyone have any idea as to what it might be?
 
when u turn it on, do the HD and fans start? or do u get a dead PC with no video signal?

well if u have testes another Vid Card and Monitor, then it has to be other things that are causing the problem, could be your Mobo or RAM.

a little specs would help ;)
 
You could have shorted your AGP/PCI-E port its unlikely but it is a possiblity
 
its an asus a8v-e deluxe motherboard socket 939 amd 64 3500 2.2ghz with a gig of corsair pc3200 memory, western digital raptor 72gb hd, xfx nvidia 6800gt video card.. i did recently notice that the leds that usually light up on the memory sticks are not lighting up... but neither stick is lighting up, how could they both go bad at the same time is what im thinking so i dont think its that, i was thinking my mobo but just wanted to know if u guys had any ideas first. and yes the hard drive turns and all the fans start. one other thing i noticed is that my keyboard works for like a second where im able to use the num lock and caps lock keys and the lights come on but then i loose that ability and my mouses led is also not lighting up... that help at all?
 
You could have fired the southbridge chipset i think it controls the RAM, I/O Panel an the graphics slot
im not certain for sure but i think you need a replacement motherboard
 
well i just set the computer aside for awhile, last night i borrowed my friends power supply, figured it might be it. Didn't change anything though. I did notice something though I thought was weird, for my monitior i have to use a vga to dvi adapter, when i just have the monitor cable unplugged from the computer completely without the dvi adapter on it, it says "check signal cable" but when i just put the adapter on it goes into "standby mode" regardless of being plugged into the computer. Is that normal?
