I think there might be something wrong with my Athlon XP 3200+

When I first got it (from anandtech forums) I hooked it up and threw a silentboost on it. That worked for a little bit, but then all of a sudden it would overheat very rapidly and cause the motherboard shutdown feature to shutdown the computer.

I thought a better cooling solution would be needed, so I got a watercooling kit from aerocool. That was even worse than the silentboost and I wouldnt even be able to get to the bios fast enough before the computer would shut itself down.

Well, I finally got a kamakazi cooler on it now and it seems to be doing OK. My problem is this. Even at idel the bios says the CPU temp on die is sitting about 70*C with the kamakazi on 4100rpm.

Now I dont know what the hell is wrong, but even trying to play a simple game of generals causes the computer to overheat and shutdown.

Do I just have some superhot rare cpu or something, I mean what the hell is going on.
 
did u apply the thermal compound right? heatsink seated correctly? too much thermal compond? too little?
 
yeah i would try his suggestion ^^^^

otherwise, your mobo temp sensor might just suck...never listen to them, they are almost never right or even within 5 or 10*C...but yeah, try reseating/reapplying thermal paste see if that helps.
 
what stepping, week is it? if its an old one it will run hotter than newer ones.
try running it at lower voltage, 1.60, 1.55v, n if it still overheats try underclocking it a bit.
 
Are any of the L12 bridges tampered with? Reason is that a XP3200+ will come from the fab without the L12 bridges touched at all...

I know how to freaking apply artic silver, and I know how tight to make the heatsink.

YES, the damn HSF is touching the CPU correctly, and yes, just the right amount of AS has been applied.

Im thinking mabye the motherboards sensor just might really suck as someone else suggested, in that case Im thinking about just turning it off and not worrying about it anymore and that will allow me to finally play some games without the computer shutting down half way through.
