I had (1) 80GB 7,2k rpm Western Digital hard drive + (1) 120gb 7,2k rpm Western Digital hard drive. The 120gb failed and I just received my new RMA yesterday.

Now i formatted the 80GB and installed windows xp pro on it. I put the 120gb on slave but it doesn't get detected in "My Computer". I'm really clueless

If i go in System->Device Manager->Disk Drives I see them both and it reports no problem
it gets detected fine in BIOS.


PS: I haven't formatted it yet , is it why it doesnt get detected properly in "my computer'?
How would you proceed?

Correct. If you're sure there's nothing on it, go back into Computer Management and Partition/Format the drive. It won't show up in 'My Computer' until formatted.
 
yes...first click the new partition option. Primary partition is fine. It will ask you a few other questions, but basically you want to assign it a new drive letter, not make it a folder in another drive or any of the other funky partitioning options. Once that is done, you'll have to click on the new partition (it will have changed color), and format it. Use NTFS. Once the drive has been formatted, you will see it in My Computer and will be able to use it.
