Problem with Laptop

Trying to figure out what is wrong with my mom's laptop, with the battery plugged in and the AC plug in it flashes an orange light on the front for the battery indicator. With the battery removed and the AC plug in it does nothing, same thing if it is just on battery.

It is an Acer Aspire 5100.

I have been searching Google with no luck so far, will continue to do so, any help would be appreciated.

Some of the older laptops need the battery in place to boot.
