Problem with first-time overclock

Well, I just to the plunge in to the world of everclocking...used my wife's computer to try things out. ;)

Here are some of the specs:

MB - Chaintech 7NJL6
CPU - Sempron 2500+
Memory - Corsair Value Select PC3200 (2x256)
PS - 350 watt Antec

The system was originally running with the FSB at 166, RAM by SPD. This gave a CPU speed of 1.75 Ghz and a memory speed of 200. I only changed the FSB to 200, and the RAM speed to 100%. Which put the processor at 2.1 Ghz (multiplier is 10.5).

I thought everthing was running well, benches ran fine, Windows, etc. ran fine. But, when I fired up Far Cry I got static and popping through the speakers and the game would crash after a vouple of minutes. Everything else ran smoothly. After returning the machine to the stock speeds, the problems disappeared immediately.

Any clue as to what might have been going on? Particularly the problems with the sound?

If I haven't provided enough info, please let me know.

No sure how OCable that motherboard is. You might not have Vcore options with it. But I'd try a small bump in Vcore to see if you can get it stable.

I couldn't find any vcore settings, don' t think that's an option on this motherboard. I didn't really expect much, knowing this isn't really an enthusiast's setup. I thought that just raising the FSB would make for a pretty straighfoward OC, at least given no vcore option.

Could the popping sounds be explained by the processor not getting enough voltage?

Coming from your speakers, yes I would think so. This would indicate to me fluctuation in power, or not enough. If the popping is coming from some piece of hardware, Its a bad thing, lets hope its not your thermal paste boiling off. :D

Its your soundcard malfunctioning because that motherboard doesn't have a PCI/AGP lock, so you are overclocking everything on the PCI bus, including soundcard.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Maybe I'm getting a bit confused, but, the board supports an FSB of 200 Mhz. Is that really overclocking anything but the processor?

If it's a voltage issue would a BIOS mod or editor allow for adjustment?

At any rate I guess I'm probably SOL since this board doesn't allow me to do anything with the voltage. This machine was never going to be an overclocker, but now I've got the bug. :) Should've have gone with socket 754 and a cheap A64.

If you can't adjust vcore, you could always try bumping the FSB down a little...you don't have to oc to 200mhz FSB to get a decent boost in performance. For my Soyo board in sig, I set the jumper to 200mhz FSB, then used the bios to set it down to 197. That way, I'm just ocing the proc, and still get a good stable 333mhz overclock. My mobo doesn't support vcore adjustment either.
