SOLVED - just another Firefox 37 bug
gahkY80.gif
turn off ff hw accel

(update: I can no longer seem to duplicate this problem with FF 37.0.1 + hw accel on.)

(update: FF 37.0.2 - "Stability fixes for select graphics hardware and feature sets".)

4790K @ stock, Asus Maximus VII Hero @ defaults, 4x8GB Trident X 2400 @ 1333. (Notice everything at stock or even severely underclocked from rating.)

What happens is that Firefox is showing a lot of image files on all websites as incomplete or a black bar across a section of the image. At first I thought it was a network issue. But I discovered if I drag the image out of FF onto the desktop, the image is correct. It's like FF gets the correct compressed image data, but then decodes it incorrectly. It's happening at a high rate sometimes on some sites like 5% (like imgur). I even tried yanking the network cord to make sure FF wasn't re-fetching the image data.

Any idea? This is a new one on me. Sporadic problem with cpu decoding, or maybe gpu decoding?

Boot into a Ubuntu live cd and try it

No problems with openSUSE 13.2 live usb drive.

Going to try disabling the video card driver now in Win 8.1 ... great, no problem when the Titan X driver is disabled. Unflashed to stock (didn't get me any extra oc anyways.) Retesting. Nope that didn't help. No problems with IE. Uninstalled GeForce Experience, reinstalled Firefox, disabled all plug-ins, no change.

Swapping in old Titan. Nope, finally got same problem.

I am stumped. CPU or motherboard or ram? Damn, I have to remove the tower cooler to remove 1/2 the system ram (well to use the proper slots as suggested by the mobo manual.) After that, will RMA cpu with Amazon but that seems ... unlikely ... I've got a spare hdd, I could install Win7 and double check first (using Win8.1 for the first time.)

It's black bars across the image, or the entire lower part of the image, or the entire image is black. It's never any other sort of corruption. Correction, one time it was mid screen with alternating black lines like a window shade.

Setting CPU to 30x100 and 1.200v -- nope no dice there either.

Oh, I guess it's Firefox + Win8.1 ... I found other people complaining about the same problem. When it starts happening, it starts happening a lot, check the image at the bottom of this page. I don't see the problem quite like that, but it gives the idea:

https://github.com/srobbin/jquery-backstretch/issues/399

Well, I burned my last allowed Office 2013 install on this Win 8.1 installation, I guess it's time to finally try Google Chrome. Firefox is also pissing me off with the close-tab-redraw-stops bug.

Firefox -> Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General -> uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available

No problems yet after that so far ...

Do benchmarks and stress tests run ok?

Furmark, Prime95, etc?

Yeah everything else is clean and working great, I did all that oc'ing / benching / testing / validation before the final wipe and golden install of the OS and my applications. Then I noticed it with heavier usage of Firefox when I got back to Imgur browsing. Still good with FF HW Accel disabled so far.

(I was afraid it would be the CPU or gpu misbehaving at low load / lower dynamic voltage.)
