Problem with dropped connection

I just today installed a D Link DGL-4300 to replace my really old zyxel router and it is pretty much as good as advertised, however, there is one problem. Every 1-2 hours the internet connection will suddenly die for about 15 seconds then come back on. This happens to both me on a wireless connection and the other computers in the house with wired connections. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? I am using a cable connection btw and on two of the computers we have static ips set up, I dunno if that helps or not though.

Thanks!

XP?

I used to have a very similar problem.
XP would drop the connection a few times a day. It immediately reconnected, but it ruined any downloads you had going.

It wasn't the firmware on the router- didn't help.
Wasn't XP- ran sfc /scannow and didn't help.
I even re-installed and it STILL did it.

But XP the last few months hasn't done it... to be honest, I could have reinstalled it and not remembered it. I run Vista now with no problems.
So it only makes sense XP could be causing this.

It was a pain in the butt because it always broke the connection when you were in the middle of a 300MB download or something.

All I can say- is I've had the above problem. Have no idea what the fix is for it. Researched it all over the place- never found a fix. Posted in forums- no fix.
But I would at least start by flashing new firmware onto your router.

I agree. Make sure you went through windows update and then flash the router firmware if there is a newer version.

The wireless at my moms house did that too for some odd reason, my sister kept trying to tell me to fix it and I flashed the router firmware then went into DHCP renew time or something in my router settings turn ed to never, and it's worked like a champ every since. What ever to get her to shut up

Yes I am using xp but i'm not sure that is the problem as all the computers hooked up to the router experience this problem, one of which is still using windows me. I have noticed one thing in particular though, every time the connection goes down for those few seconds I look at the log for the router and I notice it says something to the effect of:

"Wan interface cable has been disconnected"

followed by

"Wan interface cable has been connected"

any ideas what this means?

That is normally what happens if you repair a connection.

But when it goes out- that means exactly what it says.
"Is disconnected" "Is connected"

I think it is some sort of configuration setting. If you've already checked everything, I really have no idea what to suggest to you.

Uninstall your NIC, reset the router. That would set everything to default.
