When I try to disk defrag it gives me this error:

C:\WINODWS\system32\dfrg.msc is not a valid Win32 application.

How can I fix this?

Sounds like your defragger got borked somehow. The easiest way to fix it is to install a third party disk defragger...which most people do anyway. You could also try restoring the file from CD through the Recovery Console.

I would download Diskeeper and be done with it :). Or just reformat like i do about every other month lol.

is that a legit copy of Windows??? ;)

try starting it from the commandline

Start > Run > (type) dfrg.msc

also have you disabled any services?

if so re-enable

if none of the above works try

Start > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > C:\ >(type) SFC

The system file checker scans protected system files and replaces the ones you (or your applications) hacked beyond repair with the real, official Microsoft versions. Type "sfc" into the command prompt to get a list of options

may be off topic, but is there a defragger that runs off of a disk or cd? maybe a dos defrag utility?

well...utilities like PageFrag (a freeware version of the boot time defrag that you get with Diskeeper or O&O) runs from outside the OS, but is limited to locked files like the registry ect.

there is also Contig which allows individual file defrag but since Ive never used it being a diehard O&O fan???

O&O Defrag Linux (free Beta) can run from a floppy
