I'm not completely sure this is the correct forum, but here I go.
Ok, I recently built a computer for my Uncle. The idea was that I would build it, load it, then ship the finished system to him. Anyway, I think I included sufficient padding, etc for shipment.
I put the finished system in the original box the case was shipped in (the case is placed inside 2 foam riser type things, there is also 1'' clearance to the box. I also included packing peanuts, and bubble wrap on the outside. I firmly believe it was sufficiently protected.
Anyway, he received it today, and he called me and told me that he got no video when he turned it on, and there was a siren sound. He is using a dell monitor with a dvi and vga connector.
Turns out there was a wire stopping the cpu fan from turning. I had him fix that, and there was no longer a siren sound. There was also no post beep.
I then had him clear the cmos. No luck.
I had him take out 2 of the 3 memory sticks. No luck, no post beep, no video.
I am stumped, because on the Abit AI7 motherboard, the error code it displays is 9.0, which means sucessful (I think).
He also checked for loose header connectors and power connectors. Everything seems fine there.
I thought that the cpu core may have been crushed, but it is an intel chip, and has a zalman7000 cu cooler on it. Granted, the cooler is heavy, but intel cores dont crack easily with the integrated heat speader. The cooler is also firmly bolted down onto the cage.
I am stumped. I am hoping the cpu or motherboard isnt dead. Does anyone have any ideas?
It is important to note that his mouse light does not come on (its USB) either. He tried all USB ports. It really sounds like this MAY be a power issue...but I am not sure...
Thanks a ton.
