Problem with computer detecting speakers/headset/mic

I apologize in advance if I posted this in the wrong forum. I'm looking for some help though. For the longest time I've been using speakers built into my monitor for sound, and plugging in headphones when needed, kind of a crappy setup but I changed it to a 4 speaker setup and bought a razer gaming headset.

I can't seem to get them working properly. First I couldn't use ventrilo because of a driver issue. I went to my motherboards site and downloaded the latest audio drivers, and now I'm facing a few problems.

- my microphone/headset jack on the front of my tower will not work.
- my mic/headset works in the back only after removing a few inputs for my speakers, so now only two speakers work and sometimes I have to restart my computer because they stop working all together..
- i switched motherboards without reformatting so I think I may be dealing with conflicting drivers. I'm not sure.

This is driving me nuts. Can someone help me out? Sorry for my ignorance. Thank you.

There's not really much you could do for troubleshooting:

- Have you checked the user manual to see whether or not the audio front ports are supported regardless of whether you're using the rear ports?
- Have you tried checking out the audio driver settings (most likely available in the Windows Control Panel)?
- Have you tried looking for and installing older, stable drivers for the onboard audio? Have you tried looking for drivers directly from the chipset manufacturer's site (instead of the motherboard manufacturer's driver page)?

Out of curiosity, what board are you using now? What board did you use prior?
