Whenever I play HL1 engine based games, i see some weird black box on certain in-game effects like this

It only happens when I use the 9 series drivers, and not when I use drivers before the ones that came with Nvidia control panel. Is there some kind of setting I need to change in order to fix this, or is the only to remedy this problem to install the previous driver?

BTW I'm running a vanilla 6800.
