Hello,

I recently got uverse and att provided me with a 2wire gateway. The gateway works perfectly fine however I am having a certain problem with a laptop running vista. It looks like some people have reported the same thing and I wanted to see if u guys can offer some suggestions. I have checked all the previous settings for my netgear router that I was using prior and everything is the same, therefore its a bit strange. I tried download a fix from the microsoft site but it didnt work, and I have mac filtering turned off. As far as password that I have is for either wpk or wpk2 however u spell it. Another thing that I found is that when I take off the password from the gateway the laptop connects perfectly fine and I can browse but as soon as I turn on the pass again, it connects but it says local only and I cannot browse the net.

What driver is your wireless NIC using on your Vista laptop? Is it using Windows to manage the wireless connectivity, or is it a 3rd party utility?

Yes that is the correct chipset, which I even tried downloading a driver for but nothing. And yes I manage everything by windows, I have to check if it has a 3rd parry software for that chipset.

Yes that is the correct chipset, .

LOL....I've learned to HATE those chipsets year after year after year...every time I come across some laptop with some wireless issues that starts taking up time....I'll look at the wireless chipset..and sure enough, Atheros. Common on Toshiba laptops.

I won't touch them anymore....haven't found a consistent fix for them. Laptops for my clients have Intel wireless NICs.....if any have Atheros..I will disable that and setup another wireless NIC in it..or replace the laptop, I will not support them anymore.

I have a 2Wire U-Verse gateway at home...I believe they auto update their firmware....only other thing I can say is try to get the latest drivers for it, and see if perhaps it has its own connection manager utility instead of using the Windows one. Although I always use the Windows one.

lol now I know to becareful with those toshiba laptops in the future lol, for now I guess ill have to use the netgear router attached to the gateway in order for the laptop to work or maybe get a cheap wiless adapter since its no point attaching a router to the gateway.

Easy enough to reconfigure your Netgear to run as an access point behind the 2Wire....change LAN IP of Netgear to be in same range as the 2Wire...the 2Wire is 192.168.1.254..make the Netgears LAN IP 192.168.1.253..or just leave it at 192.168.1.1. Disable DHCP on it. Uplink to 2Wire via LAN port...you will not use the WAN port of the Netgear. Now it's just an access point.

Or...just connect the WAN port of the Netgear into one of the LAN ports of the Wire...log into the 2Wire from behind your Netgear....change your Netgear to 192.168.0.1....or 192.169.<something other than 1>.1. So it's running a different subnet. Leave DHCP enabled on it. You'll use it as a regular router. Now..while connected to your Netgear...log into the 2Wire..192.168.1.254..yes it will work...you can log into the 2wire from behind your netgear on a different subnet. Go to settings tab, firewall tab, applications/pinholes/dmz.....look for 3rd radio button choice "DMZ Plus mode". Set your Netgear into that....(2wire will memorize mac address of netgears wan port). Power cycle Netgear, power cycle 2wire...power cycle netgear again...now, your netgear should obtain the public IP address from your ISP on its WAN port...so now you're not double NAT'ing...the 2wire is pretty much just running as a modem.

I got it fixed! I went to the atheros web site and updated a driver and it worked! however speed on the laptop is ridiculously slow. have tried to reset the gateway to see if speed increase and it does but then it dies down again, im going to keep at it and see if I figure it out.
