I recently got an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro XT 256 meg for my old arse Dell Dimension 8250. It set me back $82 after shipping from geeks.com... i got it before i found the ATI special on there web site :(

Anyways, i uninstalled my old drivers, and installed the most recent drivers. Everything looked good but then i tried some gaming. In Oblivion the graphics look great but there are a crap ton of artifacts. A BUTT load. I'm thinking this could be due to overheating but i'm not sure... the fan on the card is running. WOW doesn't have as many artifacts as Oblivion, but they are there.
Here's the deal... My old ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128 meg card never artifacted with either game.

Any suggestions to fix my problem? The card came with a 1 year warranty so that's good. I was wondering also if i should just send it back to geeks.com and try to get the x800xl from ATI's website, that is if i can still return the card.

Any help would be awesome...

Thanks in advance,
Morathin

First make sure your case IS getting proper cooling
Second is it OC turn it down to stock settings

Do what rcf1987 said. If that doesn't work, send it back and get the X800XL. If it does work, send it back and get the X800XL.

Remember Geeks.com = refurb for a vast majority of the product sold. So RMA that bad boy right away. Artifacting is heat/overclocking issues.

Thanks for the posts...

it's not overclocked that i know of, i wouldn't know how to do that. i will try getting a fan to blow onto the card and see if that helps.

Also, how do you RMA a card? Sorry about the noob questions.

if you just purchased it call geeks and tell them it's fubared and ask for a.) a refund or b.) a new card.
Once a card starts to artifact there is a good chance it's all down hill.

Update: I called Comp. Geeks and RMA'd the card, i just got in house credit since they didnt have any other cards i wanted. Then i went over to ATI's website and purchased the x800xl woot! :D

Thanks for all the help!

Oh, btw the card was overheating. When i went to replace the card with my old graphics card the 9800 pro xt burnt my fingers lol
