Problem with ATI Mobility Radeon 9700

I needed a Laptop for school, and the ONLY laptops available had ATI cards in them. I refused to buy a laptop that used shared memory between the video card and the System RAM, so I ended up with a Laptop that uses a Mobility 9700.

I just "updated" drivers, and now my screen is being forced to 1024X768, whereas the native resolution for my monitor is 1280X768. There is NO way I can see in the god damned driver to fix this, other than rolling back to the other driver. Is there a fix for this, or will i need to roll the driver back? Or shoudl I return this laptop and buy a little wagon thingy, and a huge battery, and turn a desktop into a 'mobile computer'? It seems like an easier alternative to using a laptop now anyway. >_<

Well...ATI could be crap, but I think it's more likely the problem lies with you not installing things correctly.

lol

Why dont you provide some specifics about the type of laptop, originally installed drivers, and newly installed drivers, and method you used to "update" said drivers if you actually want help.

delete your c:\ati directory
download ati's official catalyst drivers
start install and let it fail and exit (to decompress the drivers)
download and use patje's mobility modder http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/
install the drivers with setup.exe in c:\ati\<whatever version of drivers you're using>

i second this notion. i always use regular cats for my mobility radeon.

Check the pebkac section in the read.me file, or use rivatuner as a temporary workaround.

That's exactly what I did, and how I got into this little spot.

I'm unable to get my monitor to run in native resolution, thanks to the drivers. Basically, if I force the darn thing to use 1280X768 in the control panel, it balloons everything, so you can't see all of hte screen. Basically, made my laptop unusable.

Going to try a different driver now.

well, its easy to tell, ATI is crap, no explanation needed.
Nvidia is only good if your after 120FPS when you cant tell the difference between 60FPS and 120FPS. Its also good if your after horrible image quaility and are after best benchmarks. Nvidia does have the proformace but has shitty IQ. I dont know about you but I buy 400$+ so I can have good image quility. Not to have crappy AA and AF and stutters like crazy. Real gamers go with ATI but if you really want to have 2 graphic cards just to brag about it go with ATI. I havent had any problems with my ATI cards but I have had problems with a few nvidia cards. I can swing either way on cards but I perfer IQ unless proformance is so horrible compared to another brand. But with ATi you only talking about 10FPS difference with top end to top end cards.

Do you have a crt monitor that you can hook up to the monitor out? roll back the drivers, enable mirror displays, and use the crt to navigate the new drivers while your lappy screen is messed up.

Where did you get the idea that all ATI laptops use shared memory?
my fathers laptop does. its that 9100 crap in his hp.

i have a laptop with a mobilty 9700 and the official ATI drivers wont work

try omega drivers they work fine for me.

I like ATI when it's good. Just like I like nVidia when it's good.

I'm on the Gred team

I know for a FACT they dont all use shared
1. I worked for Dell supporting the things, I have SEEN the actual memory chips soldered onto the board
2. I have a Sager with a 9600 Pro in it with 128 megs ONBOARD< NOT SHARED

lmfao...this has been the best thread. Thanks heaps, guys. It was great.

To the OP:
I specifically said to you in the game forum - "Use the Omega drivers, they've been tested before being released, works fine with all Mobilitys, no dicking around with the totally painful Cat modder"
It was simple, and I'll guarantee it fixes the problem that was probably in all kindly honesty created by you in the first place.
Now, for any other "ATI=Crap", "ATI-Teh sux0rz" or "ATI=FTL!!1", please refer to your pre-installed support base here.

I'm gonna give the Omegas a shot later...

I currently have a CRT hooked up to my VGA out on my laptop, later this week we'll be betting a pair of brand new LCD monitors.

I'm gonna give the Mobile drivers a shot once more later...

O_O I sure hope they don't, as mine states in the specs that it has dedicated video memory! Windows reports 1024 megs of System RAM, which would be lower if it was using shared memory.

When I bougth this laptop, I specifically looked for a Mobile Athlon (not a Turion), and for a laptop that comes with a video card with dedicated video memory.

In hindsight, the thread topic should have been 'ATI drivers = irritating'. I'll eventually learn how to get this thing working right, I did with my ancient ATI card that no longer is being used. And FWIW, I have a mobile 9700, not a 9100.

You are disconnecting the CRT before trying to reset the video resolution, right?
Some lappys go all apeshit when they autosense something hooked up to the VGA out.

You've probably got the CRT limiting your display resolution to 1024x768, because the drivers automatically think that anything connected to the VGA on a laptop is a projector, and will automatically limit to that resolution to avoid damage to it.
Try :
A) Disconnecting the CRT from your laptop, and changing the resolution then.
B) Going into the advanced section of CCC, finding "Displays", setting them up so that the secondary display is a CRT monitor, not a projector (should just select it's properties, and untick "Projector" button), setting the displays up as mirror (if that's what you want), putting LCD as primary, CRT as secondary, and changing the resolution for each one seaparately.

The driver went apeshit before I connected the CRT. Indeed, it went apeshit before I even had the CRT working. I have the CRT hooked up just so I can actually see what's on my monitor.

This has been one of the most irritating nights ever. I'm read to break something. If one more thing decides that it doesn't want to work, this laptop is going out in the street, and I'm going to run it over with my car, then drive my car into this room. I'm seriously at the end of my rope tonight.

Let's see here. In this thread, I have had to:

A) Change the title
B) Remove seven posts that were either off-topic and/or replies to the troll title.
C) Remove a post with flaming in it

Time to throw out a link to the [thread=760666]Rules[/thread], because it's apparent that there are people posting here that don't like to follow them. I'd better not have to visit this thread again.

Heh, I got some of the mobility drivers to work properly, which surprised me. O_O

Is there a way to get normal catalyst drivers to actually understand that my native resolution isn't 1024X768? Or is this a limitation in hardware/drivers?

Now back to playing games over remote desktop...

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say that the drivers aren't detecting the maximum resolution of your screen. Why, I'm not sure. You should be able to override the setting in Control Centre, though (will check when I go home, not on an ATI here), and specify exactly what the refresh rate, max resolution, etc is for the monitor on that device.
Also, press the "function" + "F5" key or whatever the combination on your laptop is that changes display modes (i.e. from between single monitor, external monitor, dual monitor, etc) until you get back to the default single monitor. Then ensure the LCD is set as primary, and have another go at setting the resolution.

before today, I never had a second monitor hooked up.

When I did force the resolution to anyting above 1028X768, it would freak out and I would only be able to se epart of the screen... Like, the start button was off the left of the mointor.
