I installed my old OCZ 520ADJ SLI into my wifes computer. It will only power up intermittently. The main power switch to the computer will turn on the system for only a few minutes after being turned off. After a few minutes the system will only turn on when the switch on the PSU is turn off and on again.

Is it the PSU or could it be a motherboard problem ?

So the system never really turns on and stays on? Or it only turns on and stays on if you cycle the main power switch on the back of the PSU?

Once turned on, it will stay on. It's when powered down for let's say over five minutes, it has trouble coming on. Almost as if the system looses it's "charge" after a while. The funny thing is the green motherboard light does stay on so the system is getting some power, just not enought to turn on, without "jumpstarting" the PSU.

Ah.. that sounds like a board problem.

Have the same issue with a BFG 650W and an Intel DP35DPM. PSU works fine with every board. But it's not a "bad board", per se. Other PSU's work on the board just fine.

Could be not enough power on the +5VSB, could be a weaker than expected signal on the PG wire. A number of potential reasons.

The funny thing is this system worked for 6 mos. I had this system in my TJ07 case and now moved it over to my wife's P180 case and now doesnt seem to want to work. Everytime I replug one of the wires in.......24Pin, P4,power cable, the system will "spark" to life and suddenly turn on.

Should I buy another PSU ?

Ah! I thought it was just this PSU switched over to your wife's PC.

If in reality, the only thing that changed was the case, then it's probably a grounding issue. Look for an extra stand off, a shorted out component (one pin off on a power or drive cable), disconnect off-board USB's (like front USB ports, etc.) and see if that helps. It could be that the PSU is sensing a short and shutting down.

Looked for any shorts. I disconnected all drives and fans and I still need to jump start the psu to get the system on. Once it is on though I have no problems and everything works. I wonder is this a motherboard problem ?

I agree with JohnnyGuru that this sounds like a case grounding issue. Possibly a standoff is grounding on the board or ?? You will likely need to remove the board from the case and test to see if the problem still exists. If it works fine, you will need to closely examine the standoffs and were they contact the board.

I would first try removing and replacing the motherboard power connectors. Be sure the are pushed all the way in.

As an alternative to removing the board from the case, you could swap power supplies and see if the problem is still there.

If you find that the problem is still there after all testing, I can get you an RMA for a replacement unit. Just let me know.
