:( This one has me stumped, and ive tried everything i know to get this hoe workin correctly but as of yet all it has done is give me a headache...
Anyhow, a short system overview...
Dell 2400
2.4 Celeron
256 Ram
Sony CRX230E CDRW
HL-DT-ST GC-8483B CdRom drive
Intel 845 chipset based MOBO
Windows XP SP2

now, the problem, which has been kicking my ass, i installed SP2 monday when it was offically released on the Microshaft homepage(and yes its a legal copy...work computer...heh) and per my network admin here he had me install nero 5.5 to get a cd burnt for him, shortly after installing nero, i rebooted the computer per installation instructions and now i have no CD-Roms showing under the "My Computer" they show in the device manager but when looking into the properties of the device it shows "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."

This is shown for both cdrom devices, the burner and the reader, and i have tried uninstalling the device, clearing the mounting info in the registry, rebooting with the devices removed, and windows re-detects the device and then shows it up as the error above.... anyone have any ideas on that?

It might have something to do with Nero. I remember catching wind of something about nero having problems with sp2.. check for updates.. or uninstall Nero and try that.

Tried uninstalling nero...going to give windows update a shot...still no go... :(

thats what i was afraid of hearing :|

is there a way to remove the trace instances of nero and get the drives themselves back?

Wait, a thing popped up in my head.

SP2 = Security.

Lame theory: SP2 is so security-paranoid-obsessed that it even blocks out the CD drives. Haha. :p

You can do a full restore (if you had that enabled or you did it manually). You can uninstall the program then find a registry cleaner or program cleaner and use it then hopefully it removes ALL of the traces enabling the drives to come back. But I'd say that's a slim chance.
