problem with 9800 pro

just got a radeon 9800 pro, installed it + the lastest ati drivers...
in ut2004 when i max character detail i get a nice slide show, i'm talking 1 to 2 frames...with everything maxed EXCEPT character detail at 1280X1024 i get great frame rates...
could this be a problem with the hardware? i'm thinking it can't really be because i get 40-60 frames in far cry with EVERYTHING maxed...
so the question is, could there be something wrong with my card? has anyone else run into this?

(rest of system: 2.8C at 230 fsb, p4p800 dlx, audigy2, corsair xms 4000)
