Problem with 930 overclocking

Well, I guess I need to start by saying that I just defected to the Intel side after years of being an "AMD guy".

To the problem...my Pentium D 930 doesn't want to overclock the way I want it to. At 3.45Ghz, core 0 runs Prime95 just fine, but core 1 throws an error on Prime95 after just a few seconds of running. I tried upping the voltage to 1.4 volts with no help at all. Am I doing something wrong or do I just have a crappy core?

Specs are as follows:
ASUS P5LD2 mobo
1G G-Skill DDR2-667
Pentium D 930
Sapphire X1800XT
Enermax 550W power supply
Maxtor 300GB SATA150 HDD

Anyone got an answer to this one?
 
I defected as well my friend LOL. But to the point, I have the 930 as well and have been able to oc to 3900 with vcore at 1.3. I have the asus p5wd2 premium btw. I can get up to 3.6 at stock vcore so I dont know what could be the problem for you. Btw, does ur board have a pcie lock?
 
Set the voltage to 1.425 or 1.450, and the FSB to 266 and you'll get a stable 4ghz like on my P5WD2-E.

Make sure all the other settings are auto (including PCIe, all other voltages, etc), including the SPD detect for the memory. If the RAM is autodetected in every way, my PC rock stable. If I try to tweak the timings, speeds, etc, I notice some instability. If I leave it at 533mhz, it runs 1:1 with my CPU and everything is stable. Give that a shot.
 
Isn't 1.45 a bit... high?

I've been afraid to move my 930 much beyond the stock 1.25v. So I've had it at 3.73/1.25v and it's solid as a rock aside from the once or twice a week random reboot.
 
Ok, new information...

With vcore set to 1.3875 (i think), voltage sits at about 1.42 as monitored by ASUS AI Booster. Problem is, it doesn't sit there for very long - vcore is fluctuating from 1.36-1.44.

Anyone else running into this kind of voltage fluctuation on an ASUS board? More specifically the P5LD2?

Tried Prime95 again, first core is ok at 3.45ghz, but second core will error as soon as the voltage drops to about 1.36-1.37, and I'm guessing that this is part of the problem.

So, do I buy a new motherboard, new cpu, buy new motherboard and cpu, or just run stock speeds until the end of summer when AMD hopefully drops pricing on AM2 dual cores and I can return to me true roots as an AMD user?

EDIT:...And with the CPU at stock speeds and Vcore set to 1.2v, AI Booster reports 1.20-1.22, no more fluctuation than that.
 
I guess I just have an unlucky chip and a motherboard with a voltage droop problem.

All I have to do is deal with having a non-overclocked computer for the next few months until AMD drops their dual core prices.
 
i have this core running at 4.1 ghz . It took me a day to get it to that but i guess it was worth it , also its air cooling i am using, its the steppings that make this possible, try all variances and see there peak and the main bit is write it all down

I hear the C1 revisions are better. But I guess I didn't get to lucky on that one.

I believe my power supply is one of the better ones out there, but if anyone believes otherwise, feel free to correct me.
 
Jump the voltage up a bit more and you should be fine.

On a P5LD2-Deluxe board, I'm running a 631 (basically the single-core version of the 3ghz 65nm CPU w/hyperthreading) at 4ghz on air, with a 1.375 voltage. It can survive on a lower voltage because it's single core. If you want to get up to 4ghz, you have to bump the voltage to around 1.4-ish+ for stability. Yeah, it's a bit high but as long as your case is cooled OK, I wouldn't worry TOO much.

BTW, that "voltage droop" is fairly normal on the Asus boards. All of my 775 Asus boards do it, and everything still works fine+stable as long as the voltage is high enough and everything is configured correctly in the BIOS.

I have a P5LD2 Deluxe and while it could over clock a single core 530J to 4GHz without any effort on my part; the board choked when it can to a 930. The board wasn't cooperating at all. Tried all voltages, etc. I gave up when I noticed most of the big overclocks were using a 955 or 975-based board.

Last week I bought an Abit AW8D and reach 3.5 GHz with a little effort and voltage boost with the 930. I gave up at this point; the Abit board needs to be reset via jumper and I'm lazy so I really like the way Asus boards recover from overclock settings that don't work (nothing wrong with just hitting reset).

1) ASUS boards got some voltage droop problems (I read something about ASUS trying to be cut some costs and cheaping out on some components that cause voltage droop under heavy load).

2) 9xx CPUs don't overclock so well on the 945 chipsets.

3) I should probably stop complaining since after all...3ghz a core, with 2MB L2 per core isn't too bad at all, especially at the price I paid.


And what do you guys think of this board?

What price did you pay?
 
yea. i've got a P5LD2 and couldn't overclock a 950 for crap. I got 3.4 tops and the computer will turn on and immediately turn off, and do this multiple times before it starts up and loads windows
 
I have a P5LD2 Deluxe and 930D. Using Scythe Ninja Pro. I can do 243fsb Stable at 3.6G/1.25V. It can do 250fsb stable too after 243fsb, each time I reboot the PC will shutdown instead of reboot. Temp are quite high nowdays, 50C idle so I leave it at 243fsb. I tried 266fsb at 1.38V stable but load temp gets to 70C. Im planning to get more powerful case fans and waiting for winter time. :)
 
The problem is the Nvidia chipset on your P5LD2... It's a piss poor overclocker. You want the P5WD2 if you're interested in any kind of OCing. Your results are normal for most people with that board.

P5LD2 uses Intel 945 chipset, not Nvidia. I think P5WD2 is a better board for overclocking, high quality components and more stable.

someone obviously doesn't own this board or know anything about it. lol. it's a 945P chipset.P5WD2 is a better board. I think it's a chipset problem since a lot of other manufactuer's boards have the same issues.

DOH, I should try putting down the beer every once in a while. I dunno why but I was thinking of the P5ND2... My bad.
