I own a XFX GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB DDR3 PCI-E XXX Edition, got it for like 2 months and ever since im having troubles with it.

whenever i play heavy graphic demanding games(crysis demo,cod4 demo, WIC) my monitor goes black and put itself into sleep mode.

I assumed that the problem is with the high temps in my case, the card ran on 72C idle and 85-90C load so it ran pretty hot.
My thought was that the card shut itself to prevent damage or whatsoever.

My next step was to buy the Thermalright HR-3 Plus and to assemble it onto the GPU in hope that the temps will drop down aslong with my problem.
I also got a 120mm fan that blows air on the heatsink.

After all that i turned on my PC, the temps dropped to 57 idle and 83 load but still i get the same black screens.
I'd like to mention that i DIDNT OC the card so it runs on its stock speeds which are 630/1000, also in 3dmark 06 i dont have this problem.

im running on vista 32, 4gb ram and 6600 oc to 3ghz, all the latest drivers as well.

anyone have a clue how to solve it part from taking it back to the store?

It seems much more likely that it is something in windows. Try setting your monitor to never turn off in Vista by changing the settings in power options. If that fixes it, then the problem is Vista. If not, it might be a hardware issue.

The power saving in vista is set on "never" in both sleep mode and turn off monitor so i dont think the problem is there.

Try upgrading to Vista X64.

The problem might be with memory addresses. With 4 GB of RAM you've already maxed out Vista x86's memory allocation, and it's probably unable to get at your vRAM.

Just a thought, see if it works.

Ok it seems that i figured it out, the problem is caused due to the high temps i got in my case.
Now that im running my system with an open case door plus the case isnt so tight agasint the room wall the temps dropped and i dont get black screens at all.
