Problem w/ newly built SFF PC

Last night I finished building another SFF system. Specs are as follows.

DFI RS482 mATX mobo
FX-55 Clawhammer Processor
OCZ Modstream 520 Watt PSU
Ultra Microfly mATX Case
GEIL Golden Dragon DDR RAM (2x512mb)
Sapphire X800GTO2 modded to an X850xt

My problem is this: When I press the power button, the system powers on momentarily, for less than a second, then shuts off. Sometimes, very rarely it'll stay on when the power button is press, but I emphasize the word "rarely". Here's another oddity: If the power button is pressed while the reset button is held down, the system will power on successfully every time.

I've eliminated the case power/reset buttons by using some custom switches, and the old screw driver trick. Same result with each attempt. The system will also reboot randomly. Sometimes it stay on for a while, other times it will power off within a minute, or before completing the post process. I have tried disconnecting the HD and DVDRW, as well as removing the video card. I've also tried other RAM.

I think it's a problem with the motherboard or power supply. I have another PSU I can try later tonight. I suppose that'll tell me if I have to go through the hassle of returning the mobo or not. I'm hoping that this is something small that I'm missing.

I would appreciate any suggestions/advice.

EDIT: After further experimentation, it seems that after a period of several minutes, the first press of the power button turns the system on correctly, and it stays on. If the power is turned off (by unplugging or holding the power button), pressing the power button again results in the system momentarily powering on then off.

Sounds like you have an intermittent short somewhere. Make sure all your cables are in good condition (no wear on the insulation), there aren't any extra standoffs under the mobo, etc. If that doesn't help, you can either start unplugging things until you find the source of the problem, or take the whole system out of the case and test it naked.

I've done everything short of taking the motherboard out of the case, and trying another PSU. I'll try the PSU first when I get home, then take the mobo out if that doesn't work.

Thanks

EDIT: Problem solved. It was a bad floppy cable. When I disconnected the cables to the drives, I forgot the floppy. I eventually replaced the floppy cable and it's running like a champ. The FX-55 is running rather toasty at the moment. I have a cnps7700 on the way though.

i disagree with the guy ^^^^ I had a floppy cable go out and it was shorting its self, got cut and was causing my old dell to not power on and if i tilted it it would turn on and run fine :) finally figured it out.... the tilting just must have kept the wires from touching...

I've never had it happen before, but after replacing the floppy cable, the system runs fine. :)
