About a week ago, my computer stopped detecting my Western Digital Hard Drive. I rebooted several times that day, and it just couldn't detect the drive.

Today, I rebooted my computer (didn't reboot in the past week). Suddenly, the WD drive is detected again... but...

The computer works fine until I go to browse the WD drive. It takes forever. Sometimes it feels like the computer froze, but if I wait 5 mins, whatever I'm browsing will eventually work.

I rebooted my machine into safe mode. Right click the WD drive, Properties, Tools, "Error-checking" I tick off "automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors." It gets to about 20% RIGHT AWAY, then takes 15 mins before an error msg pops up saying the scan failed. ("Windows was unable to complete the disk check.")

When I try to do it through command prompt, it hangs at exactly 20%. I'm leaving it running now (command prompt's chkdsk), but it's been 30 mins and still at 20%.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

umm check cabling?
how old is the drive?
any strange noises?
is it chock full of stuff?
last defrag?

If I had nothing on it to lose I would just reformat and let it do a full check it may be a virus messing it up. But I would bet on the hard drive is dying. You could download wd diagnostics and test the drive never know!

I ran a chkdsk w/ auto fix and repair and recover (forget the flags)

I started it around noon on Sunday.

I ran it till 6:30 pm Tuesday.

I finally rebooted. It froze on phase 4 at 0%.

Numerous errors detected, some repair attempts made, etc.

I think I have to get ready at kissing my data good bye :(
