I've got an Compaq NX9010 laptop (P4 3.06, 512M RAM, ATI Radeon IGP 345M video card [64M] running Windows XP) and I'm trying to run Doom 3. I know it won't look awesome, but I know it should be better than it is. I've tried all of the latest drivers, updates, patches, etc that I could find with no luck improving performance. WIth all the settings at the absolute bottom, all effects turned off, and a resolution of 640 x 480 the game is still choppy. A Co-worker has an older Compaq N800C laptop (P4 2.4, 768M RAM, ATI Mobile Radeon [64M] running Windows XP) and he can run it at 800 x 600 with most effects on a whole hell of a lot smoother than I can. What gives?

well the IGP is Integrated Graphics Processor. That card can bearly play CS, and doom 3 has way more pollygons than CS.

Sorry to say, but you wont be able to get any better proformance than what you're getting.

Yes the IGP is what is killing u shared memory just does not cut it. My advice to get the most is to use the omega drivers but ur not going to get much more out of it :(

not a chance in HELL off playing doom3 on that lappy do u have
its like trying to run doom3 on the origional radeon card...
not even a 7500

Does your friend have a regular mobility radeon, or a mobility radeon 7500, 9000, etc.?

my suggestion is to be really, really nice to your friend ... you know, buy him some gifts ... until he lets you use his laptop

Lol, okay I suppose it was a pipe dream to attempt to play Doom 3 on that one. I just placed an order for a new one though that hopefully can play it better. It's an HP Pavilion ZX5000 (P4 3.2 w/ HT) with 512M RAM, the 128M ATI Radeon Mobility 9600, and a widescreen display. I got approval to order a laptop so I figured I might as well spec one that can do some damage. :D

Whats the plan for the laptop (compaq) above? Wanna sell it?

Im not so sure that laptop is your best choice. I have an emachines M6805, which boasts a mobility athlon 64 3000+, 512 MB PC2700 memory, and a mobility 9600 (Dedicated 64 MB).

It does run doom 3 decently, however, when running at 800x600 and med quality.

This model also has a widescreen display. Doom 3 does not provide native widescreen display (although you can stretch the image, and do other tricks, but they are not foolproof, any may degrade performance).

I would suggest going with a mobility 9700 at the least, and 256 MB of dedicated graphics memory. I saw some nice sager laptops about a month ago. They may cost a bit more (although still less than alienware overall), but they are high quality, and if you really want to play doom 3 to the max, you mis well get a decent system.

You also really need 256 MB of graphics memory if you plan on playing at a reasonably high res (widescreen is usually pretty high) in doom3, far cry, or whatever.

But hey, if you dont mind a skewed aspect ratio, then be my guest :). It drives me up the wall, though, heh.
