Problem using Firewire Drive in Windows XP SP1

I am posting this for a friend who has been having trouble with his integrated Firewire. The important parts include:
ASUS A7V133 (I'm not entirely sure that this is the right model but it is ASUS)
Windows XP SP1
Firewire/USB external hard drive and Firewire only external hard drive

He has all the latest updates regarding the motherboard. Whenever he tries to write to the Firewire/USB hard drive using USB it works flawlessly. But when he tries Firewire on the Firewire/USB drive or the Firewire only drive, the connection is lost when he tries to write data or randomly when he is doing something else. He's looked around for Firewire drivers to no avail. Anyone know what might be the root of the problem and how to fix it? We are both pretty sure that the problem is in the driver.
