I have been using a 256MB stick of PC-3200 with my 1.8Ghz P4 (400FSB) for a while now with no probs. a day ago a friend offered me a 256MB stick of PC-2100 for cheap. I know it's best to use matched sticks but it's not a dual channel setup (Gigabyte 8PE667 Ultra "Intel 845PE"). and since the CPU is only a 400FSB part I figured it would be ok. I mean I used to mix PC-100 and PC-133 back in the day.

Every time I put the two sticks in the board the computer either will not post or it will only detect one stick. I find to get it to post at all I have to have the pc-2100 stick in the lower slots (ie pc-2100 in slot 0 and pc-3200 in slot 1 or 2) this will allow the board to post and enter the BIOS but it only sees 256MB and windows will crash while loading. The sticks by themselves both work fine in the board in any slot.

Any one have any ideas of anything it might be I have a feeling they just arn't compatible with each other but I figured I would try posting here first.

It is very possible that two memory sticks will not work in the same computer together...even though they will both work fine by themselves. This is especially true if they are of different timings. It's probably that everything you have is not defective, just they won't play nice together.
