Problem OCing with Vista Ultimate x64

Hey everyone,

I'm having a very strange issue. To start off, I'm dual-booting XP x64 and Vista Ultimate x64. My CPU is an AMD 64 x2 5200+ Windsor and mobo is Gigabyte M57SLI-4 with the most updated BIOS. I can overclock it to 2.91GHz (x13 multiplier/224 bus @ 1.3v) and XP works fine.

However, when I run Vista, Vista automatically underclocks my processor back to the default, 2.6GHz. In fact, in CPU-Z, my multiplier changes between x5 and x13. It will stay at x5 most of the time and jump up to around x13 when I start a program or something.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Since when can an OS change the clock speed?? Ugh.

Thanks,

Hmm.. nevermind. I figured it out. I had to change the Power Options to "High performance." What a stupid feature.

It's a power saving option, and IMO there's no reason to turn it off. It throttles back when you don't need the power and throttles up when you're using it. What's the problem with that?

Well, I like overclocking. It's not like im OCing this CPU to 3.2GHz or anything. 2.91GHz is still on the conservative side for this.

yeah, but are u using 2.91 gigahertz when you are doing nothing?
