Its with my roommates computer.
1.7Ghz@1.87GHz
Abit BD7
256 or 512 of PC2700
2 HDDs
Running XP

Problem is that the computer will reset if left idle for about 20-30 minutes. We have to leave a movie a playlist playing in order for it not to restart. what gives?

Make sure (look under power management tab) that it's not set to turn off after idling for a half hour or so. That would be the problem.

If thats not helping, then I really do not know.

Right click --> Properties --> Screen Saver --> Power -->

Make sure it doesnt tell the Hard disks to turn off after idling.

thx, but thats not it. everything in there is set to never turn off other than the monitor.

Do you have another PSU you can try with it?

Or possibly test the voltages on the current psu? (try to download a program called speedfan.. www.majorgeeks.com search for SpeedFan).

hmm..
3d Screen Saver comes on, ram too high, 3d shuts down machine.. possible that could happen, i've seen similar stuff..

Turn off any Screen Savers

Set speed to default (i.e. remove the overclock)..

And lastly..
Right click on "My Computer"
Choose "Properties"
Click on the "Advanced" Tab
Click on the "settings" button
Under the System Failure section....
Uncheck Automatically restart..

Check your event log for errors..
I'll bet you find some that can help direct ya to the problem.

ok, i turned of the auto restart thing and now it just goes to a blue screen of death instead of restarting so i just turned the autorestart back on.

I found out that if i try to run a disk defragement or analyze any partition, the computer will immediately die and restart so I'm thinking it might be his PS.

btw, i forgot I took off the OC a long time ago. its running at 1.7Ghz.
