I'm having a bitch of a problem getting WinXP
to load on a new built system.

Athlon XP 2200+
MSI NF2 mobo
512 megs DDR266
30 gig 5400 samsung
350 Antec smartpower PS

It boots fine. Everything is set correct in bios.

What happens is win WinXP start copying files to the harddrive
it says it not the correct file. Or I get the blue screen of death.

Any ideas? All input welcome.

Could the harddrive have a problem?
It's a old drive out of my friends PC.
It's his new budget rig I'm building.

I even tried setting the FSB to 100 to see if it would load.
Still the same error running the system at half speed.

Does it fail on the same file every time? If it does I would say you have a damaged install cd.

Does it fail a random points? That could be attributed to bad ram or a bad HD.

Run memtest86 on it and see what it tells you.

Also, try putting another drive in there to see if you can install to that.

Bad HD, bad cd (check for scratches or dirty), or bad memory.

While I'll agree it's worth testing, it could be a lot more than RAM.

List of likely suspects:
RAM
CPU
Mobo
CD
HDD
IDE cables

Picking one at this point is a shot in the dark.

That is very true and I am sorry for jumping to conclusions. ;)
It's just that whenever I see that error happen during an XP install it is 99% of the time bad memory.

(No I am not trying to be an a**) :D :D

No problem, I just don't want you to get stuck in that line of thinking. Sometimes that leads to forgetting what else it could be, it's also much more likely a bad CD. Most people just figure that out themselves (errors usualy are read errors from the CD drive, CD looks funky, whatever) as many people install their OS from a burned disk.
