First the system specs:

Chip: XP 2400+
Current Heat Sink: Cooler Master Aero 7
Old Heat Sink: Default Heat Sink that come with the processor (retail)
Mobo: Asus A7N8X
Ram: Corsair (Not sure what it is but it's running in dual channel mode on the mobo)
Hard Drive: Western Digital 80gig (100 ata with 8 Meg Cache)
Power Supply: Antec (smart power?) running at 400 watts

Ok I'll try and get keep this short and to the point. Yesterday I went and bought and the heat seek above which is currently in it. I installed it, everything seemed to be going good. I went into the bios to see temp. and it was around 39 c.

I go to the load screen of Win XP Pro and it freezes on me. It kept freezing on me so much that I went and formatted the partition. This time I try to reinstall XP and I get as far as "Windows Is Starting" and it freezes. I try this again with Win2k and get the same thing.

Now, I go I experiment and do a hard drive install of knoppix (linux) and it runs just fine. I format the drive again and run tests with Western Digital checker for both windows and Dos, no problems.

I try a different drive (Maxtor 80 gig) and it does the exact same thing, loads as far as "Windows Is Starting" and freezes.

I checked everything, no excessive heat and any burny smells. I flipped around IDE cables and still nothing.

I'm at a lost in what to do. Anyone have any ideas? Perhaps I damaged the mobo and/or the cpu?

Check all your cards, reseat them if possible, i bet the videocard was knocked while you changed heatsinks, if you still have problems try running setup with minimal components.

Good Luck

Pull a stick of memory out.

I would guess that your memory might have a problem in dual channel mode.

Hey, worth a shot?

Hey thanks but still no luck at all when I'm trying to re-install XP or win2k.

Relax your memory timings a bit...

Reset the BIOS to defalts?

...just throwing some stuff out there.

These problems can be quite anoying, because it is not always possible to determine exactly what is the problem easily. It becomes a "swap parts until it works" solution.

Good luck!
