problem in Lost Coast on x700pro

Thats the way that area looks on every card. I think you are just remembering it differently.
no i went and looked at lost coast on a 6800gt and it looked like it did with my 6600gt which was smooth. in steam forums other ati owners have the same look but nvidia is smoother and more natural. i wonder if lack of SM3.0 is the reason for the hard edges? i dont want to argue so here are some pics. these are from hl2 to back up what i am talking about. this is from the x700 http://photobucket.com/albums/e122/toyota582/?action=view&current=waterpicati.jpg and this is from a 6800gt http://photobucket.com/albums/e122/toyota582/?action=view&current=waterpicnvidia.jpg

Looks like a driver issue, or settings issue to me...
i have tried other drivers and every setting possible. also that CCC sux so bad. no more ATI for me.

HL2 doesn't use SM 3.0

It's a glitch, I've seen it happen before. Try uninstalling and re-installing with the latest Catalyst drivers.

I don't seem to have this problem with my x800xt.

I looked around google for a while and in all the HL2 and ATI vs Nvidia articles I read, none of the pictures showed any difference between ATI and Nvidia's rendering of water - none of them said anything about it, either.

Link to article with pics of 6800U vs x800xt. Check out the two water pics for each card:

http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2004/12/01/hl2_evaluation/2.html

Also, it wouldn't be a SM3.0 vs 2.0 thing, because HL2 doesn't use SM3.0.

Hope you can figure it out.

there are a few guys in the steam forums with the same exact problems. its more of a well known issue than i thought. one guy with an x850 posted his pics and they are indentical to mine. i have seen a number of screenshots with ATI cards and they have the hard edges on the water. :(

Has anyone tried just reinstalling HL2 like Brent suggested a couple posts up? Did it work? Are there any ATI users in those forums who aren't having the problem? Like I said, I didn't see hard edges when I pulled up Lost Coast just now.

Also, this article lists some differences between DX8 and DX9 in HL2, and the water blending into the shoreline is listed as a DX9 feature; water with a "hard edge" is characteristic of DX8:

Is it possible that your copy is running in DX8 mode for some reason or that you set it to run that way on purpose to help with performance?

Let us know.
