I'm runing Windows XP Home and I cannot seem to complete my formats on my external USB HDD. I bought an external HHD kit and have tried 3 HHDs from IBM, Maxtor, and WD ranging from 20-80GB. The drive does show up under 'My Computer' and I'm able to right click it and select format. However, at the very end of the format, Windows tells me that the format was unable to complete. If I do a quick format, the same error message pops up immediately. I've also tried formatting under 'Disk Management', but the same thing happened. I know the external HHD kit is good because it has worked before--my old HHD crapped out on me hence the need for a new one. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Between your old hard drive crapping out, and 3 new drives not working, perhaps it is time to question the USB HDD enclosure after all.

I was kinda hoping it wasn't the enclosure...I'll try reformatting on another XP machine before I throw in the towel.
