Problem driving me insane. Could a power button do this?

I have a Gigabyte GA-EP43 mobo with a quad core 2 ghz chip 4gb of OCZ DDR RAM and a 9800GT XFX video card.

They were being powered by an Antec 600W blue series PS.

Randomly the system would reboot. I did the typical reseat, blwo out dust time and time again. Re installed OS time and time again.

Still the reboots and power downs. The power downs would happen a lot and I wouldn't be able to turn the system back on.

I let the whole thing sit for almost a year because I was so fed up.

Now i revisited it, tested each component piece by piece. It seemed when I left the chip in, it would keep rebooting. So I bought a new LGA775 3ghz dual core.

Did not solve the problem.

Bought a new powersupply. Still nothing.

The weird thing is the system would run for 72 hours straight, suddenly shut down and would stay off for hours. I couldnt get it turned back on.

I had a a cheap mini atx intel board. Put the chip, card, and memory in there. Plugged the new PS to it. Ran fine installed everything.

Now we're back to shuttdown randomly again. The only thing consistent is the video card and memory. Even when I swap memory or remove vid card, it still won't turn on.

What I'm thinking is...

Could the power button actually be causing this? Maybe something screwed with it?

Could the electrical in my house be causing this? I have knob and tube going to a normal 100 amp service box. Could there be some fluctuation in the current causing this?

I'm going insane with this problem - any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Have you tried motherboard bios updates? If you think its the swtich in your case, disconnect it and use a paperclip to power it on. That will tell you if you need a new case / switch. Also I had a intel chipset problem at work that sounds very similar. Turned out to be memory with incorrect voltage ratings.

Glad you asked that.

Yes I did on the Gigabyte and still happened. I've been running this intel board for 48 hours, playing MWF3 no issues. I just went to upgrade the bios, clicked the download on intel's site - boom it shut off and now I cant turn it back on.

What model # is your memory? Manual states 4 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory

Sorry forgot to include that, on the sticker it says 1.9 not sure if that matters.

On the Gigabyte board I did a software reset by going into the bios but did not do that on the intel. Would a hard reset be removing the battery?

You could remove the battery but I would exclude the 1.9v memory on your next test.

damn that's all I have is the 1.9 stuff, I have the non gold OCZ (1GB sticks) but are rated for 1.9 as well.

Noticed that the intel board booted right up on 1 stick of the 2GB however you need both sticks in correct?

Its hard to say specifically that its memory. Maybe another [H] member could advise. I'm just speaking from experience with a similar problem.

Manual says yes:
Dual Channel mode cannot be enabled if only one DDR2 memory module is installed.
2. When enabling Dual Channel mode with two or four memory modules, it is recommended that
memory of the same capacity, brand, speed, and chips be used and installed in the same
colored DDR2 sockets for optimum performance.

Make sure your populating channels 1 and 3 or channels 2 and 4 with only two sticks.

hm the intel board only has 2 slots - maybe i'll go back to Gigabyte and try that. I know I tried 12 ways to sunday, but perhaps I overlooked the 1/3 setup?

You can always run memtestX86 to test your memory configuration but I found with my last voltage problem that it reads OK when realy its not OK.

Wait, I didn't know your fooling with another board. LOL that adds another layer of complexity. What model is the intel board. All my previous posts were for your gigabyte.

Intel specifications for that board are very specific: Two 240-pin, DDR2 1.8 V (only) SDRAM Dual Inline Memory Module
(DIMM) sockets

Think you may need new memory.... :(

argh. will try with it's original memory I had for that board. I do have the specific 1.8 for that, but it's only 2 x 1GB sticks

booted up with OK now. I wonder if the Gigabyte was struggling with the 1.9 OCZ stuf all along. But even when I had the PS hookd to that, it woud constantly flick on and off. Didn't think RAM could make that happen.

BAM. Put the 1.8v in, was downloading drivers from intel, looking at newegg for other RAM, reboots.
