I splurged a bit recently and upgraded my computer. I installed my new pieces, and my new monitor and was enjoying my new computer for a couple of days. Then I went to replace the VGA monitor cable that came with my monitor with a new DVI cable I got.Except now there is an issue with displaying my windows correctly. I am running an SLI setup, and for some reason, when I have the DVI plugged into the top video card(main pci express slot), the display on my monitor shows the bios, and the loading. It even shows the Windows XP loading screen with the progress bar moving across. However, once it actually loads windows, the screen goes blank. However I hear the normal windows load sound like its loaded correctly, but the monitor says it is going to power save mode because it doesn't detect the computer being on any more.
So then I decided to plug the DVI cable into the bottom video card. This time it does the opposite. I do not see the bios, or loading screens. I don't even see the Windows XP progress bar. The whole time the monitor stays asleep because it doesn't detect anything. However all of a sudden my desktop appears. So apparently somehow the top video card is showing the loading screens, but the bottom video card is showing the actual windows xp. I can't figure out at all why this might be.
I've tried a bunch of different things to see what may happen. I tried loading the computer with the DVI cable, and then transferring the cable after it was loaded to the bottom one. Yet when I do that, it doesn't show windows like it does when I start it in the bottom. I tried switching up a few things inside, but nothing changed the outcome. I then even tried taking out my second video card, and just having my top one in there. This actually allowed the DVI to show everything correctly. However, obviously I don't want to have to use only one video card. After all I bought these video cards because they support SLI and I wouldn't have bought two if they didn't. Here is a rundown on the specs of my new computer:
-ASUS P6T Deluxe LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
-Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920
-G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL9D-4GBNQ
-2 setup with SLI, EVGA 512-P3-N971-TR GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail
-Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
-Antec TruePower Quattro TPQ-1000 1000W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply
-LG W1952TQ-TF Black 19" 2ms Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 10000:1DCR with HDCP Support
There are my specs. I can't figure out at all what might be wrong. Like I said, it was working fine using an VGA cable with a DVI adapter. And now it won't work right since I changed to a full DVI cable. I don't think it has anything to do with the cable, since the singal does get there and work fine if I take out one of the two video cards. So its gotta be something with the setup or some type of bug. Hopefully someone can shed light and help me figure out this problem. I wasn't sure to post in this forum or in the video card forum. But since I don't know for sure what is causing the problem, the general forum seemed best. I'll be around if this is confusing to understand if anyone wants to ask a question or two to figure out what I meant. Thanks to everyone in advance.
